    Abstract: Processes for the recovery and purification of noble gas stream contaminated with small amounts of hydrogen and/or other getter combustibles. One process involves dividing the noble gas stream gas into a first and second noble gas streams. The first noble gas stream is sent to a second metal getter containing a bed comprised of a metal getter in an oxidized state wherein the hydrogen is combusted. Oxygen is added to the second noble gas stream and the stream is passed through a catalytic unit wherein the hydrogen is combusted and then through a first metal getter bed operating in parallel with a second bed wherein the metal getter is converted to its oxide form. When breakthrough is detected in either bed, the flows of the first and second noble gas streams are rerouted to the other beds, respectively.

The method comprises providing a first adsorbent zone containing a first adsorbent material and a second adsorbent zone containing a second adsorbent material wherein the selectivity of the first adsorbent material for the first minor component relative to the second minor component is greater than the selectivity of the second adsorbent material for the first minor component relative to the second minor component. The average particle diameter of the first adsorbent material and the average particle diameter of the second adsorbent material preferably are substantially the same. The gas mixture is passed through the first adsorbent zone and subsequently through the second adsorbent zone. A purified gas containing the one or more major components and depleted in the first and second minor component is withdrawn from the second adsorbent zone.

    Abstract: The process recovers NF3 from a multicomponent fluid containing NF3, one or more components less volatile than NF3, and one or more components more volatile than NF3. The process uses a first distillation column and a second distillation column, each distillation column having a top and a bottom. The process includes the following steps: feeding the multicomponent fluid to the first distillation column at a first feed location below the top of the first distillation column; feeding a cryogenic liquid to the first or second distillation column adjacent the top of the first or second distillation column; withdrawing a mixture containing NF3 from the first distillation column; feeding the mixture to the second distillation column at a second feed location; separating NF3 from the mixture in the second distillation column; and removing a stream of NF3 from the second distillation column.

    Abstract: A cryogenic method and apparatus using a liquefier and a two stage distillation column capable of operating in two modes, namely a first mode of operation during which only liquid nitrogen is produced and a second mode of operation during which liquid nitrogen and liquid oxygen are produced. By adjusting the time of operation in each mode, any ratio of liquid nitrogen to liquid oxygen greater than the ratio achieved during the second mode of operation can be achieved. In the first mode of operation, a condenser is used to condense the lower pressure stage gaseous nitrogen into lower pressure stage nitrogen condensate. To condense the lower pressure stage gaseous nitrogen, either at least a portion of the crude oxygen liquid from the higher pressure stage, at least a portion of the oxygen-enriched liquid from the lower pressure stage, at least a portion of the liquefied air, or mixtures thereof, are introduced to the condenser.

Feed gas is transferred from a depres-surising bed to a repressurizing bed to reduce switch loss and repressurization is extended to occupy at least 50% of the cycle to smooth the feed gas output.
