Patent number: 9407498Abstract: Embodiments of the invention include a method for providing UE session resilience performed in a first PDN-GW that is coupled to a second PDN-GW, which are both in a PDN-GW pool. The method provides UE session resilience by allowing the first PDN-GW to provide connectivity for UE sessions previously serviced by the second PDN-GW after the second PDN-GW becomes non-operational. The first PDN-GW recognizes that the second PDN-GW failed and then activates a plurality of standby UE sessions. Each standby UE session is a backup UE session corresponding to a previously active UE session serviced on the second PDN-GW. Each standby UE session is associated with a UE device and a network resource identifier of an APN slice. The first PDN-GW transmits a message to a SGW that is servicing the UE sessions that indicates that the SGW should direct traffic previously bound for the second PDN-GW to the first PDN-GW.Type: GrantFiled: May 5, 2015Date of Patent: August 2, 2016Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Staffan Bonnier, Hans-Ake Lund, Lars Gunnar Folke Ahlstrom

Publication number: 20140321271Abstract: According to one embodiment, a packet data network gateway (PDN-GW) receives a UE congestion status message originating from an eNodeB indicating a UE is congested. In one embodiment, the PDN-GW receives a request message from a policy charging and rules function (PCRF) to create a new policy and charging control (PCC) rule for the UE. The PDN-GW discards the request message to prevent a request to create/modify a bearer for the UE from being sent by the PDN-GW, and prevent a response message denying the request message to create/modify the bearer for the UE from being sent by the eNodeB, reducing the number of bearer creation or modification messages being exchanged in the EPS. According to one embodiment, an Evolved Node B (eNodeB) determines that a UE communicatively coupled to the eNodeB is congested, and sends a UE congestion status message destined for the PDN-GW.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 24, 2013Publication date: October 30, 2014Applicant: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: STAFFAN BONNIER, SAMY TOUATI, MATTIAS WAHLQVIST

Patent number: 8218557Abstract: Communication sessions are each homed on one of a plurality of line cards in a network element. Packets received by the network element are processed on the home card before being transmitted to a subscriber device, such as a mobile phone or laptop computer. When a packet is received by the network element, it is not necessarily received by the line card that serves as a home card for the respective session. The packet is switched within the network element from the receiving line card, i.e., the trunk card, to the home card. The network element identifies the home card by performing a lookup in a table duplicated on all the line cards using the least significant bits of the IP address in the packet. Using these bits to organize the table limits the size of the table and balances load among the line cards.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 2010Date of Patent: July 10, 2012Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Brian R. Patent number: 8200739Abstract: A method in a server for controlling the distribution of messages from a plurality of clients among a plurality of processing means, including the steps of: establishing whether a message received on an interface board of the server is addressed using a normal identity specific for the client that sent the message and, if yes, then: using a first algorithm to map the normal identity to a load index in a first mapping means; and, mapping the load index to one of the plurality of processing means using a mapping table provided in the interface board. If the message is addressed using an internal identity generated in the server, rather than the normal identity specific for the client that sent the message, then: using a second algorithm to map the internal identity to a load index in a second mapping means; and, mapping the load index to one of the plurality of processing means using the mapping table provided in the interface board.Type: GrantFiled: June 23, 2005Date of Patent: June 12, 2012Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (Publ)Inventors: Staffan Bonnier, Hans Ronneke, Anders Freden, Staffan Winell

Publication number: 20100054255Abstract: The invention discloses a Home Virtual Private Network server (250), a Home VPN server, for use in a communications operator network (120), which network (120) can communicate with a subscriber network (130), and in which operator network a first protocol on a first level is used. The subscriber network (130) can accommodate at least one subscriber with one subscriber device (131-135) and a communications device (140) which can connect the subscriber to the operator network (120). The Home VPN server (250) comprises functions for: translating IP-addresses and port numbers of IP-packets which are sent between the operator network and the subscriber network, assigning individual IP-addresses to devices in the subscriber network, routing IP-traffic from the operator network to devices in the subscriber network, to which functions the subscriber can connect via said communications device (140) in order to utilize his network (130) as a Home VPN.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 22, 2006Publication date: March 4, 2010Applicant: TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET LM ERICSSON (PUBL)Inventors: Staffan Bonnier, Hans-Ake Lund, Sten Pettersson, Staffan Winell

Patent number: 7542447Abstract: A pool of functional server nodes in a packet data network, and method of transferring a given mobile terminal from a current functional server node to a target functional server node in the pool. An interface enables each functional server node to control any, or a number of, radio network control nodes. When a transfer is desired, the pool selects the target functional server node and initiates a transfer of control responsibility for the given mobile terminal's connections from the current functional server node to the selected target functional server node. The control responsibility is then transferred to the selected target functional server node without interrupting service to the given mobile terminal.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2003Date of Patent: June 2, 2009Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Hans B. Publication number: 20060193289Abstract: The present invention relates to an arrangement comprising a packet data support node comprising a functional server node forming part of a conglomerate, or pool, of functional server nodes in a number of radio network control means, each functional server node being able to control any, or a number of, radio network control means, to which mobile terminal stations are connected. The functional server means support transfer/redistribution of mobile terminal stations between each other without interrupting the connection of the mobile terminal stations. The invention also relates to a method of redistributing or transferring mobile terminal stations.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 20, 2003Publication date: August 31, 2006Inventors: Hans Ronneke, Niklas Lundin, Anders Henriksson, Sten Pettersson, Anders Ahlen, Staffan Bonnier
