  • Publication number: 20090322337
Abstract: A method and system for measuring formation resisitivity is achieved by introducing an electrical signal into the formation. The current of the introduced electrical signal is then sensed, producing an analog voltage signal as a measurement of the formation. The introduced electrical signal is compared with the measured signal of the formation. The comparison is made in a quadrature demodulation device, producing an in-phase demodulated signal. A quasi-direct-current signal is extracted from the in-phase demodulated signal, producing an analog measurement related to the resistivity of the formation.

  • Publication number: 20070257679
Abstract: An improved induction tool for formation resistivity evaluations. The tool provides electromagnetic transmitters and sensors suitable for transmitting and receiving magnetic fields in radial directions that are orthogonal to the tool's longitudinal axis with minimal susceptibility to errors associated with parasitic eddy currents induced in the metal components surrounding the transmitter and receiver coils. Various transmitter receiver combinations are provided to select sensitivity to a desired reservoir formation properties, for example, different orientations xy, xz, yz, 20-40, 20-90, and combinations, such as, Symmetric-symmetric; Asymmetric-symmetric; and Asymmetric-asymmetric. Measurements made with a multi-component logging instrument when used in a substantially horizontal, vertical or deviated borehole in earth formations are diagnostic of the direction of resistive beds relative to the position of the borehole.

  • Publication number: 20050242819
Abstract: The present invention provides a compact magnetic sensor capable of use in pad mounted applications and field focusing applications. The present invention provides an induction tool with a compact induction sensor having electromagnetic transmitters wound on a longitudinal core member of a C-clamp shaped transmitter core. The tool is suitable for transmitting magnetic excitation fields in multiple directions, both parallel and transverse to the tool's longitudinal axis with minimal susceptibility to errors associated with parasitic eddy currents induced in the metal components surrounding the transmitter and receiver coils. The horizontal (transverse) members of the C-clamp shaped transmitter core can be rotated to orient a magnetic excitation flux path passing between the horizontal (transverse) members and through the formation. The horizontal members can be replicated on a single longitudinal member to shape the flux path.

  • Publication number: 20050030059
Abstract: An induction logging tool is used on a MWD bottom hole assembly. Due to the finite, nonzero, conductivity of the mandrel, conventional multi frequency focusing (MFF) does not work. A correction is made to the induction logging data to give measurements simulating a perfectly conducting mandrel. MFF can then be applied to the corrected data to give formation resistivities.

  • Patent number: 5814988
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring induction resistivity and nuclear magnetic resonance properties of earth formations penetrated by a wellbore. The apparatus includes a magnet for inducing a static magnetic field in the formations, a transmitter antenna positioned proximal to the magnet and having a principal magnetic axis substantially perpendicular to the principal magnetic field direction of the magnet. The apparatus includes receiver antennas positioned at spaced apart locations from the transmitter antenna, a circuit for generating radio frequency power pulses which is selectively connected to the transmitter antenna, and circuits for measuring the voltages induced in both the transmitter antenna and induced in the receiver antennas. The measuring circuit is adapted to measure voltages in the receiver antennas during the radio frequency power pulses, when the voltages are induced in the receiver antennas by electromagnetic induction.
