  • Patent number: 4188228
Abstract: Glass pellets for use in producing glass for the manufacture of glass fibers are described in which a significant portion of the pellets are made up of fiber glass cullet. The pellets of glass fiber batch contain quantities of fiber glass cullet from 5 percent by weight to 35 percent or more by weight. The glass fiber cullet employed is in the form of ground glass or short glass fibers, 0.0625 to 0.5 inch (0.158 to 1.27 centimeters).

  • Patent number: 4074991
Abstract: A process is described for preparing boric acid-containing glass batch compositions suitable for the preparation of glass fibers in which the batch, prior to its introduction into the furnace, is pelletized by adding water in sufficient quantities to maintain an adequate balling action and thus provide pellets in a form such that preheating by direct contact with flue gases does not cause deterioration of the pellets.

Date of Patent: February 21, 1978
    Assignee: PPG Industries, Inc.
Inventors: Stanley F. Brzozowski, Joseph E. Cooper
  • Patent number: 4074989
Abstract: A process is described for preparing anhydrous boric acid (ABA)-containing glass batch compositions suitable for the preparation of glass fibers in which the batch, prior to its introduction into the furnace, is pelletized by adding water in sufficient quantities to maintain an adequate balling action and thus provide pellets in a form such that preheating by direct contact with flue gases does not cause deterioration of the pellets.

  • Patent number: 4074990
Abstract: A process is described for preparing colemanite-containing glass batch compositions suitable for the preparation of glass fibers in which the batch, prior to its introduction into the furnace, is pelletized by adding water in sufficient quantities to maintain an adequate balling action and thus provide pellets in a form such that preheating by direct contact with flue gases does not cause deterioration of the pellets.

  • Patent number: 3999951
Abstract: Apparatus for chlorinating metal-bearing materials, e.g., titaniferous ores, to produce metal halide, e.g., titanium tetrachloride. The apparatus comprises a cylindrical furnace having an interior portion providing a chlorination zone and a floor adjacent the lower portion of the chlorination zone. The floor contains a plurality of perforations extending the thickness of the floor, which perforations define a gas channel extending from a chlorine chamber located below the floor to a point of discharge in the chlorination zone. The perforations preferably contain gas distributor tubes having a gas bore in open gas communication with the perforations in the floor. The opening in the perforation or gas distributor tube is a single vertical opening, at least one principal linear dimension of the vertical opening, measured across the opening, being not greater than 7/32 inch. Means for introducing chlorine into the chlorine chamber and means for withdrawing reaction products from the shaft furnace are provided.
