  • Patent number: 8834713
Abstract: An intake strainer for establishing a sufficient water supply to a suction hose. The intake strainer includes a triangular-shaped body having an elongated bottom, a screened intake, and foot members extending from the body for elevating the intake. The body also includes interior guide vanes angled from the intake towards a central opening of the body to form water-receiving channels. Optional low water-level control blades may also be used with the intake. Extending from the side opening of the body is an outlet member which serves to fluidly connect to a hose, such as a fire hose, or a threaded coupler which would in turn connect to a threaded part of the fire hose. The strainer may be attached to a support plate for being affixed to a supporting frame of the holding tank or alternately may be used in a skimmer assembly and/or be attached to a flotation member.

  • Patent number: 5588779
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus for use with an underground tank of fire suppression fluid in which the fluid level within the tank can be visually determined quickly during pumping operations. Also, the fluid in the underground tank is protected from freezing by draining the fluid standing above the top of the tank. Protection against collapse or rapture of the underground tank is provided by a method of ventilating air into and out of the tank.

  • Patent number: 5509437
Abstract: A dry (unpressurized) hydrant utilizes a hydrant pipe wherein a submerged end carrying a strainer assembly is placed at a predetermined depth within a body of water, such as a lake or a pond, with the unsubmerged end being located above ground adjacent the water surface. A check valve installed behind the underwater strainer allows the pipe to be filled with water delivered from a tank onboard a pumper truck. Flooding the pipe in this manner allows the pumper truck to then pump water from the lake or pond, through the hydrant, with little or no priming necessary so as to meet fire suppression demands. A vent valve located on the pumper intake connected to the unsubmerged end allows air to escape from the pipe during the filling process.

  • Patent number: 5257643
Abstract: A dry (unpressurized) hydrant utilizes a hydrant pipe formed from PVC. One end engages a sliding swivel mount attached to a post with the other end of the pipe being free to swing and to be placed within a nearby body of water. The free end may include a strainer assembly, also formed of a PVC material. The strainer end may be placed at a predetermined depth within a body of water, such as a lake, pond or the like, by means of a second support located proximate the body of water. Alternatively, the strainer end of the hydrant pipe may be provided with a buoyant float to maintain the level of the strainer end of the hydrant pipe just below the water surface. In another embodiment, the strainer end of the hydrant pipe is provided with a rotating wheel assembly which enables the strainer end of the hydrant pipe to be rolled into position beneath the surface of the body of water. The dry hydrant is formed from inexpensive and lightweight materials and can be stored dry when not in use.
