The operations further include, responsive to the determination, generating a network function (“NF”) discovery request including a service area indication requesting service area information for discovered SMFs. The operations further include communicating the NF discovery request toward a NF Repository Function (“NRF”). The operations further include receiving a NF discovery response including SMF identifiers and service area information for a list of SMFs. The operations further include selecting the SMF from the list of SMFs.

    Abstract: Embodiments include methods for a policy control function (PCF) of a communication network. Such methods include, during establishment of a packet data unit, PDU, session for a user equipment, UE, determining one or more UE application descriptors that correspond to a network application identifier (AppId) of a service data flow (SDF) template for the PDU session. Each UE application descriptor includes a first identifier (OSId) of a UE-supported operating system (OS) and a second identifier (OSAppId) of an application for the UE-supported OS identified by the first identifier. Such methods include sending policy rules for the PDU session to a session management function (SMF) of the communication network. The policy rules include the UE application descriptors. Other embodiments include complementary methods for an SMF, as well as PCFs and SMFs configured to perform such methods.

    Abstract: A method to operate a Network Function, Repository Function, NRF, to manage NF profiles of Session Management Functions (SMFs) in a communication system is provided that is configured to communicate with other network functions of the communications system through a network interface. The NRF receives NF profiles for the SMFs, wherein at least some of the NF profiles each include both a SMF identifier and a service area information for a respective one of the SMFs. After receiving the NF profiles, the NRF stores the SMF identifiers and the service area information of the NF profiles in a repository in memory. The NRF may also receive a NF discovery request for discovering SMFs. After receiving the NF discovery request, the NRF may retrieve from the repository at least one of the NF profiles respectively for at least one SMF based on content of the NF discovery request. The NRF communicates a NF discovery response containing the SMF identifier and the service area information of the at least one SMF.

In this manner, an IoT device is able to securely transmit to the 3GPP network IP data/non-IP data/raw application data over an unsecure non 3GPP access network such as Wireless Local Area Network.
