Patent number: 11810309Abstract: Techniques are provided for vision-based altitude estimation using one or more platform mounted cameras. An embodiment includes generating projected ground imagery of imagery provided by cameras of the platform, the projection based on a hypothesized altitude. The method also includes obtaining reference ground imagery based on the location of the platform, the location based on platform navigation data. The method further includes registering the projected ground imagery to the reference ground imagery and generating a match score associated with the registration. The method further includes selecting the hypothesized altitude as the estimated altitude based on the match score (e.g., if the match score exceeds a threshold value or is maximized over a set of hypothesized altitudes.Type: GrantFiled: December 22, 2020Date of Patent: November 7, 2023Assignee: BAE Systems Information and Electronic Systems Integration Inc.Inventors: Stephen P. DelMarco, Victor T. Tom

Publication number: 20220034669Abstract: A navigation path planning method includes receiving an initial position of a navigation path and a terminal position of the navigation path. The initial position represents a current position of a vehicle or other platform that is navigating to the terminal or target position. The method includes calculating the navigation path from the initial position to the terminal position as an objective function of a navigation reliability term and a navigation accuracy term. The navigation reliability term represents a probability of successfully reaching the terminal position along the navigation path, and the navigation accuracy term represents the probable distance between the terminal position and the navigation path. The calculated navigation path is provided to a navigation system to cause the platform to navigate along the calculated navigation path.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 28, 2020Publication date: February 3, 2022Applicant: BAE Systems Information and Electronic Systems Integration Inc.Inventors: Simone B. Bortolami, Stephen P. DelMarco

Patent number: 10445616Abstract: An image registration system and method for matching images having fundamentally different characteristics. One exemplary feature of the system and method includes the use of an enhanced phase correlation method combined with a coarse sensor model to hypothesize and match a custom match metric to determine a best solution. The system and method may be operated on a non-transitory computer-readable medium storing a plurality of instructions which when executed by one or more processors causes the one or more processors to perform the image registration method utilizing the enhanced phase correlation.Type: GrantFiled: January 22, 2016Date of Patent: October 15, 2019Assignee: BAE Systems Information and Electronic Systems Integration Inc.Inventors: Victor T. Tom, Stephen P. Delmarco, Helen F. Webb

Patent number: 9667463Abstract: A system and method use an inverse square root function (ISQR) function, in part, to compand and decompand signals. A system includes a companding processor and a transmitter. The companding processor compands input signals into companded signals using a compander function, C{x(n)}. The compander function compands the input signals based, at least in part, on an inverse square root (ISQR) function over at least a portion of a signal amplitude probability density function. The transmitter then transmits the companded signals as electromagnetic wave signals.Type: GrantFiled: September 15, 2014Date of Patent: May 30, 2017Assignee: BAE Systems Information and Electronic Systems Integration Inc.Inventor: Stephen P. DelMarco
