    Abstract: The position of a smartphone placed on a touchscreen is determined. Smartphones are placed on a touchscreen of a table PC, and user interface images are displayed respectively around the smartphones to perform cooperation. The table PC displays a position pattern to determine the position of a smartphone being placed. The position pattern includes a pattern of two tones. A camera of the smartphone captures a blurred image of a predetermined location of the position pattern. The table PC identifies the position of the smartphone, from a tone value of the captured image received wirelessly from the smartphone. The table PC can thus determine the position of the smartphone without using special hardware.

    Abstract: The invention provides a method for a portable electronic device such as a computer to be capable of safely coping with the occurrence of a surprise removal from an external hard disk drive (HDD) connected by wireless. An HDD is connected to a portable computer by wireless via a wireless extension device. First, a wireless communication path between the HDD and the portable computer is configured. Subsequently, a file is read and edited by accessing the HDD from the portable computer. Next, removal information indicating that the portable computer is away from the HDD is produced. The removal information can be produced by detecting an acceleration generated in the portable computer, or by directly detecting the distance by the strength of the wireless signal. Data under editing is saved before occurrence of surprise removal by ejecting the HDD in response to the production of the removal information.

In the doze mode a shift event is created, and a process existing at that time is force-suspended or an I/O processing completion notification is suspended to a process that makes an I/O request to the HDD. As a result, the laptop PC is enabled to operate with small power consumption by stopping the HDD while maintaining a specific function.

A run process list registers a process to be run during boot up. When the computer system is being booted up, if the run process list registers a process to load the boot file, a process control unit does not control a process management unit, so that the process is run as usual. If the process is not registered, the process management unit suspends the process. When the suspended process is called by another process later, the process control unit makes the process resumed on demand.
