    Abstract: This invention relates to a fiber optic polarization controller which controls the polarization direction of the light propagating through an optical fiber by curving a single-mode fiber within an imaginary plane S to generate birefringence on the fiber and by rotating the plane S defined with the thus curved portion. The invention aims to prevent twists of the optical fiber which are caused in rotating the plane S by rotating the fiber in one direction from the plane S simultaneously with the rotation of the plane S and correspondingly to the angle thereof. The optical fiber may be rotated either by utilizing the stability of fiber which is held loosely at a curved portion or by forcibly rotating the curved portion from outside.

    Abstract: An amusement device consisting of a manipulative puzzle having a plurality of hollow prism-shaped pieces rotatably connected by swivel joints. Each swivel joint comprises a base centrally formed in a wall of one prism and inserted through a hole located in a confronting wall of an adjacent prism. The base is secured by a screw passing through a washer fitting over the swivel joint base. In addition, a set of projections fit into corresponding depressions located on the respective confronting walls to hold the prisms in place until moved. An infinite number of configurations may be imparted to the puzzle by manipulating the prisms, however, it is preferred that the player manipulate an elongated rectangular shaft of interconnected prisms to attain a substantially spherical configuration.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a microbiological process for the production of citric acid by assimilation of .alpha.-olefins, normal paraffins and their mixture. This process is carried out by culturing the microorganisms selected from the group of Candida tropicalis, Candida lipolytica, Candida intermedia and Canida brumptii and their mutants and their variants under higher concentration of dissolved oxygen than that in ordinary aeration in the culture medium. The concentration of dissolved oxygen in the culture medium is suitable in the range of from 5 to 40 ppm, preferably from 10 to 30 ppm on the weight basis of said culture medium in this invention.There is many means of which increase the dissolved oxygen in the culture medium.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to a suppressing method of iso-citric acid formation in producing citric acid from hydrocarbons by fermentation.This process is carried out by culturing the microorganisms selected from the group belonging to Candida tropicalis, Candida lipolytica, Candida intermedia and Candida brumptii and their mutants and variants in the culture medium containing paraffinic and olefinic hydrocarbons and their mixture as carbon source under aerobic conditions, wherein specific non-ionic surface active agent is added to said culture medium.The specific non-ionic surface active agent added to said culture medium is selected from the group of sorbitan fatty acid esters and polyoxy-ethylene sorbitan fatty acid esters. The amount of specific surface active agent added to said culture medium is enough from 0.005 to 0.5 percent by weight, preferably from 0.02 to 0.2 percent on the weight basis of said culture medium.

    Abstract: A toy is described which has a housing which includes an elevated centralized object repository. Associated with the object repository is at least one peripheral section of the housing which includes an inclined top surface. The inclined top surface has a plurality of object locating holes which are arranged in sequence up the inclined surface. An object is sized to fit partly through the object locating holes. An object propulsion member fits beneath the top surface and includes a plurality of object striking projections which are located off-center beneath each of the object locating holes. When the object propulsion member is activated, if an object is located in one of the locating holes, the striking surface associated with that hole strikes the object and can propel the object toward the next locating hole. This is repeated until the object is deposited in the object repository.

    Abstract: A game of skill has a support housing on which there are located a plurality of independent object transfer mechanisms preferably no two which are identical. The transfer mechanisms are aligned in a sequence such that a pathway includes a plurality of discontinuities along its length which divides it into a plurality of segments. Each of the transfer mechanisms includes one segment of the pathway and some of the transfer mechanisms can also include more than one segment. This creates a discontinuity in the pathway between each of the transfer mechanisms as well as between each segment when more than one segment is found on one transfer mechanism. Each of the transfer mechanisms includes a movable portion which is moved by the operator of the game via a control mechanism attached thereto. By manipulating the control mechanisms a spherical object can be caused to travel across the pathway.

    Abstract: The optical nonreciprocal device is used to optically couple together two opposed optical fibers. The light from one optical fiber is separated into ordinary ray and extraordinary ray by a first birefringent crystal member. The separated ordinary and extraordinary rays are subject to a total of 90.degree. polarization rotation by transmitting in a forward direction through a magneto-optical member having an angle of polarization rotation of 45.degree. and through a compensating plate. The separated ordinary and extraordinary rays are synthesized by transmitting through a second birefringent crystal member and then applied to the other optical fiber. A lens is interposed between one optical fiber and the first birefringent crystal member for causing the light to propagate through the light path while being converged or diverged.

Normal olefins of C.sub.8-40 produced from thermal cracking of petroleum wax or from polymerization of ethylene are suitable as carbon source for this fermentation process. Said process is carried out by culturing the microorganism selected from the group of Candida tropicalis, Candida intermedia and Candida brumptii, their mutants and their variants in the culture medium containing acid olefins. Citric acid is accumulated in said medium in the process of the culture.The most suitable strain utilized in the present invention is Candida tropicalis, their mutants and their variants.

The pump employed includes a port located so as to be capable of directing a current of the fluid generally toward the movable part of the target so that the pressure of the current against this part of the target will cause it to move as the pump is operated to eject fluid through the port.

    Abstract: A game capable of being played by two different persons can be constructed so as to employ a transparent housing serving to hold a fluid. A movable member having a specific gravity greater then the specific gravity of the fluid is located within the housing in the fluid. Two separate circulation structures are employed for circulating the fluid within the housing. Each of these circulation structures is capable of withdrawing fluid from within the interior of the housing and then ejecting the fluid back into the interior of the housing through a nozzle. The nozzles of the two circulation structures are located separate and apart from one another and are directed relative to one another so that the circulation structures are capable of being operated to cause currents within the housing for moving the movable member which vary and interfere with one another.
