    Abstract: A novel, linear, chlorine-containing polyether-sulfone polymer excellent in flame retardancy, heat resistance, transparency, and water resistance, which is obtained by polymerizing at least one aromatic tri- or tetra-halide with at least one dialkali metal salt of a dihydric phenol, and a process for the preparation of this polymer. The polymer is represented by the following general formula: ##STR1## wherein X and Y stand for a hydrogen atom or a chlorine atom, with the proviso that at least one of X and Y is a chlorine atom, Q stands for a direct bond, --O--, --S-- or a divalent aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon group in which the carbon number is an integer of from 1 to 6, m is 0 or 1, and n is an integer of from 10 to 1000.
