    Abstract: A magnetic head assembly equipped with a slider having a magnetic head and a gimbal spring on which the slider is mounted with an adhesive. The gimbal spring is supported by beam portions of a load beam. A thin-film wiring pattern formed on the load beam extends to a surface of the gimbal spring. A tip of the wiring pattern acts as a terminal portion that is connected to input/output terminals integrally formed on the slider. The slider is locked on the gimbal spring by electrically conducting bonding and an adhesive. A plurality of dummy patterns having the same height as the wiring pattern are provided at a position corresponding to where the adhesive is dropped on the surface of the gimbal spring. The adhesive is placed in an area sandwiched by the dummy patterns on the gimbal spring.

    Abstract: A head supporting mechanism includes a loading beam, a flexure and a head slider. The loading beam has a proximal portion, a distal portion and an intermediate portion defined between the proximal portion and the distal portion while at least partially overlapping with the head slider. A width of the intermediate portion is smaller than those of the head slider and the flexure. Accordingly, the flexure is exposed on opposite sides of the intermediate portion of the loading beam. When the head slider is attached to the flexure after the flexure has been mounted to the loading beam, a jig is disposed while bridging the intermediate portion of the loading beam to press the exposed part of the flexure. The distal portion and the intermediate portion have the same width and the same cross-sectional shape.

According to a second aspect, the Young's modulus after hardening of the adhesive agent applied onto the adhesion surface of the slider is selected to be smaller than about {fraction (1/13000)} of the Young's modulus of the slider material or of the gimbal spring material. According to the first aspect, therefore, the area of the gimbal spring on which the adhesive agent is applied is limited by the slit. According to the second aspect, the Young's modulus of the adhesive agent after hardening is so small that the warping amount of the slider caused by a change in the temperature lies within a predetermined range.

    Abstract: A medium-opposed surface of a slider body is hemisected into first and second areas by the centerline extending in the longitudinal direction of the slider body. The second area is designed to generate a positive pressure larger than that generated at the first area when a load acting on the slider body in a direction toward a recording medium decreases. The head slider of the type is allowed to enjoy the imbalance of the lift on the slider body. This imbalance can be utilized to intentionally induce increases in the roll angle and the pitch angle of the slider body. The increase in the roll and pitch angles causes disappearance of the lift and the negative pressure generated at the medium-opposed surface. The head slider can reliably be distanced from the moving surface of the recording medium solely with the assistance of the airflow acting on the medium-opposed surface.

    Abstract: A head assembly which can prevent an increase in the frictional force between the head and the recording medium, even if the spindle motor is rotated in the reverse direction during start-up of the disk drive. The head assembly includes a suspension having a roundedly bent portion for generating a spring load and a gimbal located on the suspension. A head slider is mounted on the gimbal. The head slider has an air bearing surface, an air inlet end, and an air outlet end. The spring load of said suspension is applied to the head slider at a load point that is offset from a center of gravity of said head slider. Preferably, the offset load point is located between the center of gravity of the head slider and its air inlet end. Additionally, the head slider preferably includes several pads extending from its air bearing surface, and the offset load point can be located at the center of gravity of the pads (as opposed to the center of gravity of the head slider in its entirety).
