  • Patent number: 7552720
Abstract: A fuel pump for a direct injection internal combustion engine having a body with a valve seat. The valve includes a valve head and the valve is movably mounted to the body between an open position and a closed position. In its open position, the valve head is spaced from the valve seat white in its closed position, the valve head abuts against the valve seat and closes the valve. An electric coil upon energization moves the valve to an open position and, conversely, upon deenergization allows the valve to move to a closed position. A control circuit controls the energization of the coil to reduce the pump noise during operation of the engine, especially at low speeds.

  • Patent number: 7406946
Abstract: A method and apparatus for attenuating fuel pump noise in a direct injection internal combustion engine. In one proposal, the direct injection fuel nozzle is suspended from a fuel rail in a fashion that avoids direct metal-to-metal contact between the injector and the engine block. The direct injection nozzle may also be connected to the fuel rail by a pair of spaced-apart seals which equalize the longitudinal pressure on the nozzle during operation. Enlarged diameter fuel reservoirs and/or a restricted orifice may be provided fluidly in series between the fuel pump and the direct injection nozzle in order to attenuate noise resulting from fuel pump pulsation.

  • Patent number: 7353813
Abstract: An engine generating two or more ignition sparks by the same spark plug, which can avoid a torque reduction caused by misfire of main ignition, can start firing and burning at proper timing depending on operating conditions, and can reduce misfires. A novel controller and a novel ignition coil adapted for realizing that engine are also provided. One spark plug and at least one ignition coil are provided per cylinder. When performing a plurality of ignitions during the compression stroke in the cylinder, before main ignition to start firing and burning at proper timing depending on operating conditions of the engine, preliminary pre-ignition is performed to form a fire seed around the spark plug. The main ignition is then performed to cause main burning. Misfire is avoided, appropriate torque can be generated, and combustion stability can be improved.

  • Patent number: 7290529
Abstract: A spark advance controller capable of controlling spark advance in an internal combustion engine with high accuracy without requiring a larger number of data maps and performing laborious optimization tests using an actual engine. In the spark advance controller, map data for controlling the spark advance is computed by a numerical simulator simulating an internal combustion engine, and the map data for spark advance control is approximated with a regression model. The spark advance is computed by using the regression model depending on the detected operating conditions.

  • Patent number: 7089913
Abstract: A control apparatus operates a compression ignition internal combustion engine by switching between spark ignition combustion using an ignition device and compression ignition combustion which self-ignites a mixture by piston compression. Variable valve mechanisms vary at least one of the valve timings and valve lifts of an intake valve and an exhaust valve. Intake air is regulated to vary the amount of air intake into a combustion chamber on the upstream side of a combustion chamber inlet of the compression ignition internal combustion engine. The variable valve mechanisms and the intake air regulation are controlled during the compression ignition combustion so as to perform the compression ignition combustion.
