  • Publication number: 20100140357
Abstract: A checkout system employs a bi-optical workstation having a first window located in a generally horizontal plane, and a second window located in a generally upright plane that intersects the generally horizontal plane. A data capture arrangement at the workstation captures through at least one of the windows data associated with products to be checked out by a customer. Both of the windows are positioned to face and be accessible to the customer, preferably by moving the workstation, for enabling the customer to interact with the workstation in a self-service mode of operation.

  • Publication number: 20060232472
Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining the geographic location of a user incorporates the sensing of a plurality of physical environmental parameters at the user's location. The parameter values are compared to corresponding parameter values associated with known locations, and a best-fit correlation is established. The identity of the determined location may be displayed to the user, or may be used to control a location-based operation, such as the unlocking of a safe, the transmission of an entry password, or the disabling of a piece of equipment. Persistence weighting values for different environmental parameters may be applied to improve the reliability of the correlation.

  • Patent number: 6796505
Abstract: A wireless system for self-service shopping is described that includes a customer identification device with an optically readable code, a portable terminal that includes an optical code reader, a local area radio, a terminal controller, and a locking mechanism, a master station, consisting of a master controller and a master radio, and a receiving rack for the portable terminals to which the scanners may be locked using the locking mechanism. A customer presents his or her identification device to a terminal which reads the code, the code is transferred by radio to the master controller which checks the identification and, if valid, sends an authorized signal by radio to the terminal to unlock the scanner. In addition, several locking mechanisms are described that are controlled by the terminal controller. An additional feature provides a shopping cart with a receiving cradle for a portable terminal that allows the customer to lock the scanner onto the cart for hands-free shopping.
