    Abstract: A method of making a texture-coated and/or insulation coated container from a flat paperboard blank in which a heat-hardenable liquid polymeric binder texturizing and/or insulating agent coating mixture is applied to one surface of the blank in a pattern of covered and open areas. This coating mixture is subjected to heat to cure the polymeric binder and expand the texturizing and/or insulating agent, optionally treated with moisture, and optionally heated to form the blank into the shape of a container, and the container produced by this method. The containers such as cups, plates, etc., are useful in food service. These containers have a coefficient of static friction which is about 0.2 to 2.0 and over and a kinetic coefficient of friction which is about 0.22 to 1.5.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a container suitable for providing insulation wherein the container has an inner shrink film liner. The sidewalls of the container, which can be made from paperboard or other suitable material, are vented to allow ambient air to freely flow through the sidewall of the container during activation of the shrink film with hot liquid or other suitable material. When the container is filled with material having a temperature of from about 130° F. to up to about 212° F., the shrink film is activated and the container provides excellent insulation, thereby allowing the container to be held in a consumer's hand for an extended period without causing burns or excessive discomfort. Methods of making this container are also provided.

    Abstract: An improved paperboard has been bulk enhanced by retaining a substantial portion microspheres in a suitable distribution within the paperboard. As in one embodiment, the high retention of the bulk enhancing additives is believed to result from the incorporation of suitable retention aids. The paperboard is able to be formed into suitable paperboard containers without loss of integrity. The resulting containers have increased hold times when they contain hot or cold food or drink.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for packaging sheet material. The apparatus comprises a housing, a first forming guide, and a banding unit. The housing defines a cylindrical cavity which is open at both ends and includes a longitudinal opening which intersects the cylindrical cavity. The first forming guide is affixed to the housing adjacent the longitudinal opening and extends into the cylindrical cavity. The banding unit is disposed adjacent the downstream end of the cylindrical cavity. The method comprises imparting a U-shaped form upon a stack of sheet material by insertion of the stack into the upstream end of a cylindrical cavity. The U-shaped stack of sheet material is then moved toward and out of the downstream end of the cylindrical cavity. Finally, the U-shaped stack is banded as the stack emerges from the cylindrical cavity.
