Publication number: 20230210461Abstract: An electronic device, such as a watch, has a housing to which a carrier is attached. The carrier has a first surface interior to the electronic device, and a second surface exterior to the electronic device. A set of electrodes is deposited on the exterior surface of the carrier. An additional electrode is operable to be contacted by a finger of a user of the electronic device while the first electrode is positioned against skin of the user. The additional electrode may be positioned on a user-rotatable crown of the electronic device, on a button of the electronic device, or on another surface of the housing of the electronic device. A processor of the electronic device is operable to determine a biological parameter of the user based on voltages at the electrodes. The biological parameter may be an electrocardiogram.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 8, 2023Publication date: July 6, 2023Inventors: Sameer Pandya, Adam T. Clavelle, Erik G. de Jong, Michael B. Wittenberg, Tobias J. Harrison-Noonan, Martin Melcher, Zhipeng Zhang, Steven C. Roach, Steven P. Cardinali

Publication number: 20230052087Abstract: A watch having a cover is described. An optical sensor subsystem is attached adjacent to or directly on an interior surface of the cover. In some cases, the optical sensor subsystem includes a substrate to which a light emitter and a light receiver are attached. The light receiver is configured to receive light emitted by the light emitter and reflected from the skin of a person that wears the watch. In some cases, the light emitter and light receiver are separated by a light-blocking wall that abuts the interior surface of the cover. In some cases, a light filter is attached adjacent or directly on the interior surface of the cover, between the cover and the light receiver.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 26, 2022Publication date: February 16, 2023Inventors: Adam T. Clavelle, Tobias J. Harrison-Noonan, Erik G. de Jong, Ueyn L. Block

Patent number: 11559216Abstract: This relates to one or more integrated photodiodes on a back surface of a PPG device. The one or more integrated photodiodes can reduce the gap between one or more windows and the active area of the photodiode(s) to increase the PPG signal strength without affecting the depth of light penetration into skin tissue. In some examples, the photodiode stackup can contact the surface of the windows. In some examples, the photodiode stackups can exclude a separate substrate. In some examples, the photodiode stackup can be deposited on the inner surface of the windows opposite the outer surface of the device. In some examples, the photodiode stackup can be deposited on the back surface and/or outer surface of the device. In this manner, PPG sensors can be included in the device without the need for extra layers and measurement accuracy can be improved due to lower light loss.Type: GrantFiled: August 11, 2017Date of Patent: January 24, 2023Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Arpit Mehta, Guocheng Shao, Tobias J. Patent number: 10506978Abstract: A wearable electronic device has a processing unit and a health sensor included in a housing, a band operable to couple the housing to a body part of a user, and a tightness sensor coupled to the band. The tightness sensor is operable to produce a signal indicative of a tightness of the band on the user's body part. The processing unit determines a tightness of the band based on the signal and perform one or more actions based thereon. Such actions may include evaluating the signal for changes in the tightness of the band according to operational tolerances of the health sensor, providing output directing the user to adjust the band to improve operation of the health sensor, monitoring changes in the tightness of the band and adjusting a measurement obtained by the health sensor, and so on.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 2018Date of Patent: December 17, 2019Assignee: Apple Inc.Inventors: Tobias J.
