    Abstract: A catheter assembly including a side branch locator that is moveable between a retracted position within a main vessel of a vessel bifurcation, and an extended position wherein a distal end of the side branch locator extends into a branch vessel of the vessel bifurcation. The side branch locator includes a first end fixed relative to a portion of the catheter assembly that remains in the main vessel. A second end of the side branch locator is moveable between the retracted and extended positions. The catheter assembly can include a moveable sheath that holds the side branch locator in the retracted position. The catheter assembly can further include a stent having a lateral branch opening through which the side branch locator extends.

    Abstract: Medical devices have material that that has a laser induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS) pattern on at least a portion thereof. The LIPSS pattern is provided by exposing a material surface to a pulsed polarized laser energy fluence below the ablation threshold. The LIPSS pattern is useful for purposes such as reducing contact areas on sliding surfaces, increasing total surface area for adhesions, providing anisotropic reinforcement of a material layer or layers, and to provide multiple channels for directing cell growth.

    Abstract: The invention pertains to coated medical devices, such as stents and balloon catheters, for delivering a biologically active material to body tissue of a patient. The medical device has a coating layer comprising a biocompatible polymer, non-polymer material, or biologically active material disposed on its surface, and at least one structural element embedded within the coating layer. The structural elements reduce the compressibility of the coating layer. The structural element may be any shape or configuration. A biologically active material may be dispersed within the coating layer or structural elements. Methods for making such medical devices are also disclosed.

    Abstract: The present invention regards an implant that may be uniquely shaped to enhance its functionality and that may also be coated with a coating system that affects its functionality. In one embodiment the implant may have a first surface that is covered with a filter material, the filter material being in contact with a catalyst that promotes the decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide into Hydrogen and Oxygen. In this and other embodiments, this filter material may be made from ceramic materials and may be meso-porous. In another embodiment, the implant may or may not be coated with this system and may have at least one strut with a tapered cross-section, the cross-section becoming smaller in area when moving from a reference point on the inside of the implant to the outside of the implant.
