Patent number: 5406817Abstract: A rolling mill has a work roll and a back-up roll for supporting the work roll vertically and driving it. A plurality of horizontal support rollers contact the work roll at barrel diameter outside the rolling region and at a both horizontal sides of the work roll and act to fix the position of the work roll in both horizontal directions during rolling and to oppose horizontal rolling forces. In order to reduce the bending of the work roll during rolling, there are provided means for applying horizontal counterbending forces to the work roll comprising members e.g. rollers, contacting the work roll at locations axially further from the rolling region than the support rollers and actuator means for urging the members against the work roll. The counterbending forces being in the same direction as the net horizontal force applied to said work roll by said back-up roll and the material being rolled.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 1992Date of Patent: April 18, 1995Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Yoshio Takakura, Toshiyuki Kajiwara, Hiroyuki Shiraiwa, Kenichi Yasuda, Yukio Hirama

Patent number: 5365764Abstract: In a rolling mill comprising upper and lower work rolls crossed each other to perform strip crown control, a straight line connecting the center of an operation side screwdown screw and the center of a drive side screwdown screw is inclined relative to a line perpendicular to the rolling direction. A cross angle .theta. to be controlled is changed in opposite plus and minus directions about the straight line connecting both the screwdown centers. A large extent of strip crown control can be achieved with a smaller cross deviation than usual in the prior art, thereby permitting omission of an equalizer beam. Further, change in the extent by which strip crown is varied upon control with respect to the cross angle becomes substantially linear and hence control is more easily conducted. Since the cross angle 2.theta. between the two work rolls is larger than 2.degree., the transition temperature is not changed and uniformity in quality can be ensured.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 1992Date of Patent: November 22, 1994Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Toshiyuki Kajiwara, Tsuneo Ochiai, Hidetoshi Nishi

Patent number: 5234154Abstract: A trailing end of a preceding bar is arranged slantingly by an angle .theta. relative to a succeeding bar such that the lower edge of the leading end face of the succeeding bar is vertically shifted from the lower edge of the trailing end face of the preceding bar with the leading end face of the succeeding bar abutting against the trailing end face of the preceding bar. After that, the succeeding bar is vertically depressed by applying a predetermined force. Since the trailing end face is inclined by .theta. relative to the leading end face, the depression causes a relative slide between surfaces of both the end faces and, at the same time, a pressure P is also produced by the wedge effect, the pressure P causing a compression force and a plastic deformation between both the end faces.Type: GrantFiled: April 27, 1992Date of Patent: August 10, 1993Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Toshiyuki Kajiwara, Tadashi Nishino, Tadayuki Watanabe, Yasutsugu Yoshimura, Takao Funamoto
