  • Patent number: 4889697
Abstract: According to the subject method of refining a ferrous ion-containing acid solution, a metal selected from a group including Al, Cr, V, B, and Zn or an acid solution of that metal is added to a ferrous ion-containing acid solution, such as an acid solution which remains after steel is washed with an acid. The pH value of the acid solution is controlled to be within the range of 3.5 to 6 by adding an alkali liquid to the acid solution, whereby a hydroxide salt of the added metal is produced in the acid solution and the impurities in the acid solution are captured by the produced hydroxide salt. As a result, the impurities can be eliminated from the acid solution such that the Si component (e.g., SiO.sub.2) content in the acid solution is within the range of 2 to 3 ppm or less. Since the content of the other impurities such as Al, Ti, and Cr can also be reduced, a high-purity iron oxide can be obtained from the resultant acid solution.

  • Patent number: 4515352
Abstract: Described is a method for the production of ferrochromium and a rotary furnace employed in such method. Raw chromium ores, fluxes and carbonaceous reducing agent(s) are charged into a rotary furnace into which oxygen or oxygen-enriched air are blown to effect smelting reduction. The layer height of the carbonaceous reducing agent and the time interval during which the layer height should be kept are specified, the reducing agent is used in circulation, while exhaust gases are utilized for pre-heating and pre-reducing of the materials for saving the energy considerably in contrast to the conventional method. The rotary furnace has plural gas-blowing, small holes passing through the furnace shell and the refractory lining. These holes may be arranged as a dual pipe whereby cooling air, fuel or a fuel-oxygen mixture may be blown or an oxidizing gas and a cooling gas such as argon may be blown through the inner pipe and the outer pipe respectively.

  • Patent number: 4378993
Abstract: A desired number of cables are drawn, along with the falling charge, into a blast furnace from its top and the forward ends of the cables are melted upon reaching the melting zone in the furnace. The length of each of the cables to its melted end is measured in accordance with the result of a voltage pulse response measurement utilizing the distributed constant circuit characteristics of the cable, and the height level of the melting zone inside the furnace is measured from the cable length by correcting it for the amount of deflection of the cable within the furnace. By measuring the cable length at each of a plurality of radial locations of the furnace, it is possible to estimate the three-dimensional shape of the upper boundary of the melting zone with a high degree of accuracy.
