Abstract: The present invention provides the chemical-mechanical polishing method having the step of subjecting a film to be polished, provided on a main surface of a substrate, and having a projection portion and a recess portion on a surface thereof, to polishing and etching, wherein the projection portion of the film to be polished is mechanically polished and chemically etched while covering the recess portion with a protective film to protect it from being chemically etched by supplying a protecting agent on the film to be polished.

Abstract: A focus error detection apparatus and an optical disk apparatus comprising a focusing lens for focusing reflected light coming from a light reflecting surface which is to be adjusted at the focal point of a projected light beam; a beam splitter means for dividing the output light of said focusing lens into a first and a second focused light beam; a first and a second photo-detector disposed respectively on the optical paths of said first and said second focused light beam, one of which is located behind the convergence point of said first focused light beam and the other of which is located before the convergence point of said second focused light beam, each of them generating outputs proportional to the amount of light within a predetermined region of the received light image, when it varies so that it is enlarged; and a circuit generating a focus error signal by using the difference between the outputs of said two photo-detectors.

Abstract: An electrolytic drainage treating apparatus is provided to treat a drainage containing a suspension of contaminated compound whereby the suspension is flocculated and removed by aluminum ions or iron ions eluted by electrolysis. The electrolytic drainage treating apparatus is equipped with a high speed electrolyzer comprising an anode and a cathode having a thin gap therebetween through which a drainage is forcibly passed as an electrolytic solution. The anode material such as aluminum and iron is eluted as ions by the electrolysis caused by passing electric current across the gap. The width of the gap between the anode and the cathode is controlled. The high speed electrolyzer is effectively used for various electrolytic treatments.
