  • Patent number: 12145386
Abstract: A method for preparing a laser marking system to create a colored laser mark on a specimen by providing a laser marking system and a specimen comprising a surface layer, where the laser marking system has a preset number of laser parameters, and performing an exploration of a first gamut specified by the laser marking system and the specimen. The method further generally comprises creating a design space with a preset number of design points; performing a marking of a sample on the specimen for each design point; measuring the sample using at least one detection device and determining a performance point for each design point; evaluating the performance space with regard to preset performance criteria using an evaluation device; generating an offspring design space with offspring design points; and creating a first gamut using a subset of performance points.

  • Patent number: 12128701
Abstract: Moiré is an appealing visual effect observable when two or more repetitive patterns are superposed. We introduce a method for designing and fabricating level-line moirés on curved surfaces. These moiré shapes are obtained by superposing a partly absorbing or partly light deviating curved base layer and a curved revealing layer formed by a grating of transparent lines or cylindrical lenses. The distances between base layer and revealing layer are adapted to the locally varying distances between successive transparent lines or cylindrical lenses of the curved revealing layer grating. We demonstrate the quality of our method by rendered simulations and by fabrication. The resulting level-line moiré display devices can be manufactured using different fabrication techniques, from multi-material 3D printing to molding.

  • Publication number: 20170217103
Abstract: According to some aspects, a method is provided of producing multicolor objects via additive fabrication by forming a plurality of layers on a substrate from a plurality of materials each having a respective color, the method comprising obtaining image data, the image data indicating a color for each of a plurality of positions, determining a plurality of color stacks based on the image data, each color stack being determined based on the color associated with one of the plurality of positions of the image data, and each color stack specifying a sequence of materials, where each material in the sequence is selected from amongst the plurality of materials, and forming, via additive fabrication, a plurality of layers from the plurality of materials according to the specified sequence of materials associated with each color stack.
