  • Patent number: 5341428
Abstract: A check or other document verification method in which a data encryption algorithm is applied to personal identification number (PIN) and selected other information particular to each document such as check number or amount of check. The resulting derivation is printed on the face of the document at the time the document is originated, in human readable form and possibly in machine readable form. The recipient of the document is issued a proprietary card, preferably an integrated circuit or "smart card", which contains an identical algorithm to that used when the document was originated. When the document holder presents a check for cashing or otherwise presents a document for verification, the cardholder is first identified with the card by inserting the card in a terminal and manually entering a PIN as is a common practice.

  • Patent number: 4066873
Abstract: An identification card system is disclosed which comprises a plastic card blank of a size and thickness that is commercially used for credit card purposes and which may have the identity of the person, company or the like to whom it is issued embossed thereon as well as art work and information identifying the issuing organization. Moreover, the identification card may have a magnetic stripe for providing magnetically encoded information thereon if desired. The identification card embodying the present invention includes one or more members applied during or subsequently of the fabrication of the card blank, which members have an omnidirectionally rectilinear bar binary coded information label applied to either the front or backside of the card. A transparent coating is provided to smooth the transition from the card surface to the surface of the label.

  • Patent number: 4001550
Abstract: A universal funds transfer and identification card for use with electronic terminals, such card including a random access memory for storing up to date account information sufficient to allow the completion of at least certain transactions without the intervention of a remote computer. The card includes a plurality of storage fields, selectively addressable for storing changeable information including account balance, total amount of transactions since last update of balance, and date of last update. The information necessary for authorizing and completing a transaction is addressed by a universal terminal for transfer to the terminal from the card. The terminal is adapted to determine the credit status of the account from the information contained on the card, perform the transaction if allowed, and update the information on the card so that the card is, itself, a record of the type and status of the account.
