    Abstract: A nonlinear adaptive filter has an input and an output, and includes an adjustable linear filter and nonlinear filter connected serially between the input and output. The parameters for the adjustable linear filter are derived from signals on the adaptive filter output and from signals on the adaptive filter input. Preferably, the adjustable linear filter is coupled between the adaptive filter input and the nonlinear filter. A parameter computer for adjusting the parameters of the adjustable linear filter includes an input coupled to the output of the nonlinear filter, a processor for processing a signal received from the output of the nonlinear filter, and apparatus for applying the processed output signal to the parameters of the adjustable linear filter. A linear filter for shaping the spectrum of a signal received from the output of the nonlinear filter is preferably coupled between the nonlinear filter output and the parameter computer.

    Abstract: A system, and method, is disclosed for substantially increasing the dynamic range of contrast of an input sequence of pixels representative of an image. In a preferred embodiment a first circuit is responsive to an input sequence of pixels representative of an image for developing bias and gain parameters. These bias and gain parameters are respectively utilized by first and second function generators to generate bias correction signals and gain correction signals, respectively. A delay circuit delays the input sequence of pixels to synchronize said input sequence with the bias correction signals and the gain correction signals. A first expansion circuit expands in a first direction the range of contrast of the delayed input sequence of pixels as a function of the bias correction signals to produce a first contrast expanded sequence of pixels.

    Abstract: An automatic system is described wherein pattern representations of epidermal ridges, such as fingerprints, are uniquely described by the extraction of specific information. Specific information such as ridge contour data, describing the ridge flow in the fingerprint pattern and minutiae data, principally describing ridge endings and bifurcations, are identified and extracted from the fingerprint pattern. Topological data, identifying singularity points such as tri-radii and cores, as well as ridge flow line tracings related to those points are extracted from the ridge contour data. The extracted information is then utilized by the system to automatically perform classification of the fingerprint pattern and/or matching of the fingerprint pattern with patterns stored in a mass file. Identification is automatically achieved by comparing the extracted information with the information stored in the mass file corresponding to previously identified fingerprint patterns.

    Abstract: An apparatus is described for detecting minutiae in a two-dimensional binary image. In a preferred embodiment a two-dimensional binary data bit stream of an image is enhanced in an enhancement circuit by pore-fill and line-thin operations. The enhanced binary data bit stream is then applied in parallel to first and second detectors which detect minutiae and extract the X, Y and .theta. coordinates of each minutiae detected in the enhanced binary data bit stream.

    Abstract: A system for detecting one or more keywords in continuous speech is disclosed wherein a speech processor extracts a plurality of analog speech parameters from the input continuous speech, an STV (Spectral Time Vector) generator circuit selectively converts the plurality of analog speech parameters into digitized spectral parameters, an asynchronous correlation circuit continuously correlates sequences of the digitized spectral parameters with stored reference mask templates representative of subelements (dyads or triads) of one or more desired keywords in order to produce continuous correlation data, and a decision function circuit is responsive to the correlation data for developing an occurrence decision output for each desired keyword that is detected.

    Abstract: Noise such as hum (whose components are self-correlated over a long time-interval) is estimated (separated) from Signal such as speech (whose components are self-correlated only over a short time-interval) by using a time-domain transversal filter, whose tap-weight coefficients may be fixed (Wiener filter) or variable (Adaptive filter). A combiner combines the estimated noise and original input signal to develop an output speech signal free of noise. The output speech may by further applied to a spectrum shaper to restore a natural shape.

    Abstract: An operator interactive pattern processing system is described which combines high speed recognition and processing abilities of an automatic portion with the estimating and recognition abilities of a human operator to extract correct data from patterns, such as poor quality unidentified latent fingerprint patterns and achieve rapid identification thereof. The automatic portion reads the unidentified pattern and extracts specific information therefrom such as ridge contour data describing the epidermal ridge flow and minutial data principally describing ridge endings and bifurcations.     Abstract: A system for enhancing a binary data bit stream derived from a two-dimensional pattern image wherein, in a preferred embodiment, each data bit in the bit stream and a preselected group of bits associated therewith are sequentially stored in a first location and in associated preselected locations, respectively, of a storage circuit of a first enhancement stage. The bits associated with each data bit are utilized as an address to cause a read only memory to develop a decision bit as a function of the address. A gating circuit develops an output bit in response to each data bit and its associated decision bit. The sequence of output bits forms an enhanced data bit stream which appears at the output of the first enhancement stage for further application to one or more additional cascaded enhancement stages.

    Abstract: Apparatus for reducing (a) background noise in a signal channel, and (b) channel gain variations, useful with spectral analysis equipment. Two feed forward circuits are disclosed: one to enhance a signal in noise (deriving an estimated signal); the other for AGC (relative to a preselected level). Background noise is estimated as a bias level corresponding to a minimum signal level detected within a preselected interval, the duration of such interval corresponding to a spectral interval of interest. Such noise estimate is then subtracted from the noisy signal of interest to provide a compensatorily biased signal or estimated signal. The compensatorily biased or estimated signal is then subjected to compensatory gain control by employing the ratio of a reference level to a peak detected level occurring within the preselected time interval as a gain control signal.
