    Abstract: In one embodiment, an apparatus includes first and second tuners to receive and process a radio frequency (RF) signal and output a first and second plurality of frequency domain sub-carriers. The apparatus may further include a combiner circuit to combine a first plurality of demodulated frequency domain sub-carriers and a second plurality of demodulated frequency domain sub-carriers into a plurality of combined frequency domain sub-carriers, and an output circuit coupled to the combiner circuit. In a first mode, the output circuit is to embed a format indicator with each of the plurality of combined frequency domain sub-carriers to indicate a frequency domain format, and to output the plurality of combined frequency domain sub-carriers with the embedded format indicator to a downstream processing circuit for channel decoding.

    Abstract: An audio/visual (A/V) system utilizes a software architecture partitioned between application specific code and common processing code. For example, in an audio context, decoder code represents an embodiment of application specific code and post-processing operations such as bass control, tone control, volume control, and mute represent common processing code. The A/V system also utilizes a RISC processor to control communication between a digital signal processor (DSP) and peripheral devices. A/V system 300 uses a first-in-first-out (FIFO) memory buffer to store communications between the RISC processor and DSP. The FIFO is preferably sufficiently large to allow the RISC processor and DSP to operate at their own respective paces. A/V system 300 also utilizes a standard command word and a manager for each DSP application that allows the RISC and DSP to easily exchange information.

    Abstract: A method of processing a stream of encoded units of data samples includes the step of calculating a sample advantage using timing information embedded in selected ones of the encoded units, the sample advantage representing a time difference in number of samples between the presentation of a reference sample and the availability of the reference sample. A number of phantom samples substantially equal to the number of samples represented by the calculated sample advantage are queued and then output from the queue at a selected rate. Substantially simultaneous with the outputting of the phantom samples from the queue, at least some data samples of at least one encoded unit are decoded and queued behind the phantom samples.

At least one of the packets of the stream of packets is embedded into a carrier frame including a carrier frame header. The carrier frame is then transmitted via the synchronous link. The data frame is extracted from the carrier frame and decompressed at the sample rate.
