  • Patent number: 4558540
Abstract: A knife sharpener includes an elongated sharpening element held within a tray that selectively telescopes within one end of a handle to store the element. The handle has a forward surface that lies in an inclined plane and approaches the sharpening surface of the extended sharpening element at the correct angle for sharpening the cutting edge of a knife blade so as to provide a sharpening guide. The tray and handle provide a thumb-operated, bolt-action device for extending and retracting the tray and its sharpening element, for locking the tray in its extended and retracted positions, and for selectively releasing the tray from its locked positions. The sharpening element may be a block of ceramic abrasive material surfaced on one face with a diamond-studded cloth to provide a coarse abrasive sharpening surface and longitudinally grooved on an opposite face to provide a fine abrasive honing surface.

  • Patent number: 4558516
Abstract: A positive lock and quick release knife and sheath wherein an abutment extends from the sheath and through the knife and a spring normally urges the knife against the abutment to positively prevent movement of the knife relative to the sheath, and the front or outer wall of the sheath being shortened to facilitate quick release of the knife from the sheath when the spring is overcome and the knife is moved away from the abutment.

  • Patent number: 4547937
Abstract: A snap lock connector is provided for positively mechanically locking two articles together while enabling their immediate separation responsive to the push of a button. The device comprises a bifurcated locking member extending from a first article and normally urged outwardly into locking position within a chamber in a second article. A push-button surmounts the locking member and projects outwardly from the second article. When the push-button is depressed, it overcomes the spring tendency of the locking member and moves the bifurcated locking portion together enabling to be withdrawn from the second article, whereupon the second article may be separated from the first article. The invention is capable of many uses, including the locking of a knife in its sheath.

  • Patent number: 4451982
Abstract: A knife having a blade pivoted to a handle is disclosed with a slidable bolt within the handle, the bolt being extended to lock the blade in an open position and retracted to permit closing of the blade. In one form of the invention, the blade includes a camming portion which retracts the bolt when the blade is opened. Also, a biasing mechanism is provided for urging the bolt into locking engagement with the blade. In another form of the invention, the bolt blade is locked in a closed position until the bolt is retracted. The handle is preferably of a unitary one-piece construction and has walls which define a tapered blade receiving slot. Bushings are held at an angle by these walls so that the bushings bear against the sides of the blade and aid in maintaining the blade in all operating positions. The knife blade is pivoted to the handle in a manner which permits removal of the blade for replacement or repair.

  • Patent number: 4442559
Abstract: A utility knife comprising a fixed blade and a tool-shaped shank with a pivotally mounted housing selectively movable between a first position about one edge of the shank to use the knife-blade and a second position about one edge of the blade to use the shank as a tool.

  • Patent number: 4414744
Abstract: Device for locking a knife having a pommel projecting from the knife handle into a sheath, comprising a rigid ring pivotally supported on the hanger portion of the sheath and adapted to be pivoted from a locking position about the pommel into a non-locking position, in which the ring lies in a plane parallel to the length of the knife when the knife is in the sheath. A leaf spring with one end fixed to the sheath engages a dog projecting from the base of the ring for selectively spring-loading the ring in either a non-locking position or a locking position in which the ring engages the pommel.

  • Patent number: 4404747
Abstract: A knife and sheath combination in which a spring loaded detent projects from the handle of the knife to engage an extension of the sheath whereby the knife is locked into the sheath against inadvertent removal. The knife handle is secured to the knife blade by an assembly that includes the spring loaded detent. The assembly can be removed to separate the handle and the blade for cleaning.

  • Patent number: 4389775
Abstract: A knife and belt buckle case in which the knife is releasably secured to the buckle. The knife includes a blade pivoted to a handle by a pivot pin which has an eccentric head. With the knife open, the eccentric head is positioned for insertion through an aperture of the buckle as the blade is positioned within a blade receiving recess of the buckle. When the knife is closed, the inserted eccentric head engages the back surface of the buckle and releasably secures the knife to the buckle. The blade is threadably mounted to the pivot pin so that, as the knife is opened, the blade moves into frictional engagement with the handle and holds the knife open. Also, as the knife is closed, the blade moves toward the eccentric head and clamps a portion of the buckle between the head and blade to thereby tightly secure the knife to the case. A detent couples the handle to the buckle and prevents undesired opening of the handle.
