    Abstract: A system, software program, and method to evaluate the performance of a well in a subsurface reservoir are disclosed. A new well module is used to evaluate new wells to be placed in fluid communication with the subsurface reservoir. An existing well module is used to evaluate existing wells that are in fluid communication with the subsurface reservoir. Wells can be evaluated to calculate performance characteristics, optimize performance, resolve any associated performance issues, or a combination thereof. A well screening module is used to quickly calculate properties of a well. A visual display is used to display outputs from the new well module, the existing well module, or the well screening module.

    Abstract: Techniques are disclosed for the safe production of shallow heavy oil sands which substantially reduce the probability of surface steam breakthrough. A pattern of injection wells and producing wells are drilled through the overburden into a relatively shallow heavy oil producing zone. Firstly the injection wells and the producing wells are cold produced for a combination of heavy oil and sand by use of a progressive cavity pump or the like. Then steam push-pull is used on both the injectors and producers until heavy oil production becomes uneconomical. Finally, low pressure steam is continuously injected into the injection well and heavy oil continuously produced from the producing wells.

    Abstract: The invention is a method of recovering hydrocarbons from an underground hydrocarbon formation which comprises drilling and completing at least three substantially parallel horizontal wells to form a substantially triangular well pattern within a hydrocarbon formation. The first well is placed relatively near the top of a hydrocarbon interval and the second and third wells are placed near the bottom of the interval on each side of the first well. A recovery fluid is injected into the formation through the second and third wells and hydrocarbons and other fluids are recovered through the first well.

    Abstract: The disclosed invention is a method of recovering hydrocarbons through parallel horizontal wells by use of steam and water injection. Steam is injected into two parallel horizontal wells to stimulate the formation and then the second horizontal well is converted to a production well. About the time of steam breakthrough at the second well, the steam injection at the first well is converted to water injection, production is suspended from the second well, and steam is injected through the second and third wells. After a suitable period of stimulation time, the third well is converted to a producing well, steam injection is continued through the second well, and water injection is continued through the first well.

    Abstract: The invention is a method of recovering hydrocarbons from an underground formation by employing modified 7 spot well patterns which contain six substantially vertical corner wells forming a substantially hexagonal well pattern and six substantially horizontal wells located within the hexagonal well pattern running between each of the vertical corner wells and the center of the well pattern. Preferably, the modified 7 spot pattern will also contain a substantially vertical central well located relatively near the center of the substantially hexagonal well pattern. Another embodiment contains six substantially vertical corner wells forming a substantially hexagonal well pattern, a substantially vertical central well and six sets of three horizontal wells, each set of three horizontal wells forming a substantially Y-shaped pattern.

    Abstract: The invention uses two vertical wells and a horizotal well located within the underground formation extending between the two vertical wells. A thermal fluid is injected into the formation through the first vertical well. Hydrocarbons and other fluids are produced from the horizontal well through a first perforated interval located near the first vertical well. After depleting this area of the formation, the first perforated interval is closed off and the process is repeated for successively perforated intervals of the horizontal well, all of which are farther from the first vertical well than the preceding perforated intervals.

    Abstract: Method and apparatus for thermally stimulating bitumen and other viscous hydrocarbon products from a subterranean formation in which the product is held. A plurality of wells are formed in the layer, which wells extend from the surface into a generally horizontal direction through the productive subterranean layer. The respective wells are spaced vertically apart whereby a thermal stimulating fluid such as steam can be selectively injected into discrete segments of the layer. Such injection will achieve the most effective sweeping action by the stimulating fluid through the productive layer. There results an orderly downward flow of the produced product and a more uniform and efficient distribution of heat in the stimulated formation.

    Abstract: A method based on an orifice flow equation is provided for determining both the quality and the mass flow rate of steam flowing in a line, such as to an injection well in steam flooding operations for recovery of petroleum. A sample of the steam is drawn off from the steam line through an orifice and is condensed and collected. The mass of sample collected and the time to collect it give the mass flow rate of the sample. Pressure and temperature measurements at the sample line orifice together with the measured mass flow rate of the sample and with known constants are used in the orifice flow equation to derive the sample steam quality. The line steam also flows through an orifice, with pressure and temperature measurements thereon. The desired quality of the line steam is the same as the derived quality of the sample steam, since care is taken to make them the same.

The liner is substantially surrounded by a gravel pack which functions to limit the amount of sand particles which are carried from the subterranean layer into the liner in response to the introduction of a flow of a hot stimulating fluid into the substrate.

    Abstract: Method for producing viscous hydrocarbon products such as heavy crude oil or bitumen from tar sands, which products must be thermally converted into flowable condition. A discrete vertical subsection of a productive subterranean layer is marginated by a pair of spaced apart vertical wells and a horizontal well that lies substantially horizontal to the vertical wells. Controlled, pressurized flows of a heating medium such as steam are introduced to one of the vertical wells and to the horizontal well, whereby to establish a controlled thermal front. The latter is progressively urged by the pressurized steam, through the discrete vertical subsection and toward the other of the vertical wells at which hydrocarbon emulsion is produced.
