    Abstract: A stuffing-box assembly has a shaft element having an outer surface centered on an axis and a housing element surrounding the shaft element and having an inner surface also generally centered on the axis. One of the elements is shiftable axially and rotatable about the axis relative to the other of the elements. The packing itself is formed by a resilient inner sleeve between the surfaces and having an inner surface engageable with the outer surface of the shaft element and an outer surface formed with a pair of frustoconical surfaces and a resilient outer sleeve between the surfaces and having an outer surface engageable with the inner surface of the housing element and an inner surface formed with a pair of axially offset frustoconical surfaces complementary to and engaging the frustoconical surfaces of the inner sleeve.

    Abstract: The medical apparatus for an operating room, especially a heart-lung machine, includes an electrically-powered device for producing data and performing operation steps and a data monitoring and analysis device which is divided into a data monitoring unit and a data analysis unit which is separate from the data monitoring unit and can be located outside the operating room in which the electrically-powered device and monitoring unit are located. The data monitoring unit (14) includes a portable and removable memory card (20). Both the data monitoring unit (14) and the data analysis unit (15) have a receiving slot device in which the memory card can be inserted and held so that data can be transferred between the units (14) and (15) by carrying the memory card from one unit to the other. Thus the data analysis unit (15) can be used with many different types of electrically-powered devices used in the operating room and can be easily located outside of the operating room.

    Abstract: The diameter of a wheel or wheels, such as railroad wheels, is measured while the wheel rolls through a measuring station or while a measuring station is moved past a wheel. Electromagnetic beams, such as light or laser beams, provide respective barriers or sensors. The spacing between the beams is fixed and the time needed to traverse the spacing is measured. The spacing has a definite relationship to the wheel diameter. A computer calculates the diameter based on the measured time and on the given wheel diameter related spacing. Even where only a portion of a wheel is available for sensing or scanning the present method may be used.

    Abstract: An ultrasonic sensor for non-invasive detection of air bubbles in a liquid flowing through a tube comprises two half-housings capable of being assembled together and two mutually opposed ultrasonic transducers, one installed in each of the half-housings. For acoustic coupling of the tube to the two mutually opposed ultrasonic transducers, each half-housing contains a chamber closed off by a flexible membrane and filled with a fluid highly transmissive of sound. The fluid displaced by the tube inserted between the two half-housings forces the membrane up in the form of a bulge on either side of the tube. In this way, an excellent contact is obtained between the chamber filled with sound-transmissive fluid and the tube. The membrane may be embedded into the side walls of the half-housings and cylindrically arched along the same.
