    Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide methods and apparatuses to determine the characteristics of a local loop using the multi-tone line-probing signals of a standard voice-based modem. For one embodiment, the multi-tone, line-probing signals of a voice-band modem are transmitted over a local loop and received at a standard voice band modem. Discrete fourier transform values are determined for each of two or more frequencies of the plurality of frequencies of the multi-tone signals. A set of discrete fourier transform values corresponding to a set of high frequencies is summed to obtain a first value and a set of discrete fourier transform values corresponding to a set of low frequencies is summed to obtain a second value. A power ratio is determined by dividing the first value by the second value. The power ratio is then used to determine a characteristic of the local loop.

    Abstract: Lower bandwidth technology is used to determine whether a communication channel can support higher bandwidth technology. A signal generator generates a series of test signals that are associated with the higher bandwidth technology. The test signals are sampled to produce aliases that can be analyzed with lower bandwidth technology. Modem parameters are accessed from a modem's memory. The modem parameters are compared with a database containing information about whether a set of modem parameters indicates that a telephone local can support broadband devices.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for coupling an External Device to a Host Computer, such that program code to be executed by the external device may be stored in the Host Computer memory and yet be essentially independent of the Host Computer. Hardware and software enable the logical displacement of a program and address bus across inter-processor interfaces. An External Device preferably provides direct access to program code stored within Host Computer memory by means of a conventional DMA function. Program code which is to be executed by the External Processor within the External Device is transferred from the Host Memory to an Instruction Buffer memory within the External Device. The External Processor determines when to request additional instructions from the Host Memory over the DMA channel on a timed interrupt basis.

    Abstract: This invention relates to a demodulator for an FSK signal having a baud rate which is independent of the signal's bandwidth. The demodulator multiplies the received FSK signal with two quadrature signals having a frequency which lies between the two frequencies of the FSK signal, to obtain the real and imaginary components of a phasor. The phasor rotates in the complex plane, the direction of the rotation depending on whether the frequency of the quadrature signals is above or below the frequency of the received signal. The demodulator determines the direction of rotation of the phasor and generates binary data corresponding to the frequency change in the FSK signal.
