Patent number: 10881448Abstract: A surgical instrument includes a body assembly, a waveguide, a transducer, and a coupling assembly. In some versions the coupling assembly translates the transducer to couple the transducer to the waveguide. For instance, a gear having arcuate troughs may engage pins on the transducer and/or waveguide to mate the transducer to waveguide. A pawl may selectively engage and prevent rotation of the gear. Alternatively, lever arms may cam the transducer into the waveguide. The lever arms may selectively couple to a casing to prevent decoupling of the transducer and waveguide. In another configuration, a locking tab can be slid and locked into a slot to couple the transducer and waveguide. Further still, levers with self-locking pins may engage and couple the transducer to the waveguide. In another version, a rotatable body portion may engage a tab on the transducer to rotate and couple the transducer to the waveguide.Type: GrantFiled: July 1, 2015Date of Patent: January 5, 2021Assignee: Ethicon LLCInventors: Kevin L Houser, William D. Patent number: 10842580Abstract: A surgical instrument including a shaft including a distal portion and an articulatable portion is disclosed. The articulatable portion, positioned proximal to the distal portion, includes a plurality of joint members. A first articulation cable extends through each first channel of each of the plurality of joint members and a second articulation cable extends through each second channel of each of the plurality of joint members to the distal portion. The first and second articulation cables are transitionable between: (i) an unlocked state, where the first and second articulation cables are free to translate distally and proximally and the plurality of joint members are slidable relative to one another to pivot the distal portion away from a longitudinal axis, and (ii) a locked state, where translation of the first and second articulation cables is locked, causing a position of the distal portion relative to the longitudinal axis to be locked.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2017Date of Patent: November 24, 2020Assignee: Ethicon LLCInventors: Jacob S. Publication number: 20200315651Abstract: A bone cutting surgical instrument includes features to mitigate heat generation during use. Excessive heat can be detrimental to bone health as well as to the instrument itself. In one example a liquid dispensing feature provides a flow of cooling liquid to an ultrasonic blade via a lumen in a waveguide of the instrument. In another example, the blade has a serrated edge with a plurality of teeth arranged in a pattern to provide dimension and space during cutting actions. In another example, the blade has an oversize distal portion that creates an oversize slot when cutting to avoid excessive contact between the cut bone and proximal portions of the blade. In another example the blade includes an irrigation slot and also a micro slot in a distal end of the blade that connects with the irrigation slot.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 31, 2020Publication date: October 8, 2020Inventors: Ashvani K. Patent number: 10603129Abstract: A surgical instrument includes an instrument body, an ultrasonic transducer assembly, and a slip lock having an arrester. The transducer assembly is rotatably mounted along a longitudinal axis within the body such that the transducer assembly is configured to selectively rotate. The arrester is configured to move relative to the ultrasonic transducer assembly between an engaged position and a disengaged position and has a catch portion and a deflectable portion. The catch portion is configured to seize the transducer assembly and selectively inhibit rotation for rotatably coupling with the acoustic waveguide up to a predetermined torque. The deflectable portion is configured to deflect relative to the transducer assembly upon receiving a torque greater than the predetermined torque. Accordingly, the catch portion releases the transducer assembly to slip relative to the catch portion for limiting coupling of the transducer assembly with the acoustic waveguide to the predetermined torque.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2016Date of Patent: March 31, 2020Assignee: Ethicon LLCInventors: Eric Roberson, Stephen M.
