  • Patent number: 4266773
Abstract: A golf ball has alternating rough and smooth bands formed in its outer surface and the rough bands are aligned parallel to the ground when the ball is teed up. The rough bands are formed to completely trip the boundary layer of air flow around the ball in order to generate forces which counteract the forces generated by the smooth bands when the golf ball rotates about certain axes of rotation so as to control the path of the golf ball during its flight. The rough bands are formed in a plurality of spaced depressions in the outer surface of the golf ball.
