  • Patent number: 6843094
Abstract: A mechanism for hemming the beltline of a vehicle door panel is combined with a mechanism for hemming the outside perimeter of the door panel, and the two mechanisms are driven by a common drive. The beltline hemming steel acts on the beltline hem before the outside perimeter hemming steel acts on the outside perimeter hem, and lost motion in the actuation of the beltline hemming steel allows the beltline hemming steel to complete the beltline hem before the outside perimeter hem is completed. The lost motion mechanism provides reduced interaction or sensitivity between the steels, and the delay in the completion of the outside perimeter hem allows the entire hemming apparatus to be more easily tuned during set-up. The lost motion allows the entire mechanism to be less sensitive to variations in workpiece thickness.

  • Publication number: 20040231397
Abstract: The upper platen of a press is driven by a ballscrew that is rotated by an electric motor. The ballscrew is suspended from the crown of the press, and the force on the ballscrew shaft when the upper platen is driven into the workpiece causes the crown to flex upward. The flexure of the crown is sensed by a position transducer mounted on a cantilever support. The position transducer generates a signal that can be used to determine the tonnage force developed by the press.

  • Patent number: 6615712
Abstract: A mechanical press drive that uses a ballscrew apparatus to move the upper platen of a press upward and downward. A first coupling is connected to a screw of the ballscrew apparatus and connects the screw to one of a movable platen of a press or a stationary member of the press. A second coupling is connected to and couples a nut of the ballscrew apparatus to the other of the platen and the stationary member of the press. A drive motor is operably connected to one of the nut and screw and relatively rotates them to impart reciprocal motion to a movable press platen coupled to the other of the nut and screw. The two couplings cooperatively isolate the ballscrew apparatus from offset and moment loading that may occur during press operation.

  • Publication number: 20030136767
Abstract: A laser welding method and apparatus includes a laser manipulator that directs a laser beam emitted from a laser generator at various predetermined angles toward predetermined positions within a laser work zone. A transport device passes workpieces through the laser work zone where the laser beam manipulator can direct a laser beam at desired interfacing portions of each workpiece to weld those interfacing portions together. The controller is programmed to cause the manipulator to weld the workpieces without halting their motion through the laser work zone.

  • Patent number: 6595407
Abstract: A flexible framing system including a framing station disposed along a vehicle body assembly line to receive and hold vehicle bodies for welding. A pair of framing gates is interchangeably supportable at the framing station. A pair of underbody tool support beams is also interchangeably supportable at the framing station. The gates and beams carry tools that positively locate and hold sub-elements of a vehicle body in predetermined positions relative to one another when the gates and beams are supported in respective framing positions engaging a vehicle body received at the framing station. A transport positioner disposed at the framing station moves the gates from respective supported positions at the framing station, interconnects the gates with the beams into a single gate-beam set, and moves the gate-beam set to a transport position for removal from the framing station.

  • Patent number: 6543605
Abstract: A gantry conveyor apparatus for transporting components between work stations in an assembly line. The apparatus includes an elevated gantry beam and two gantry carts movably mounted to roll along the beam. The gantry conveyor apparatus also includes a conveyor coupled to each gantry cart. The conveyor moves the carts along the gantry beam between stations in an assembly line. A lift tube is supported on each gantry cart and engages a part at one station, raises the part to an elevated transport position, and lowers and releases the part at a subsequent station. The apparatus also includes a harmonic lift drive coupled to the lift tubes and drives the lift tubes using a single motor rather than a separate motor at each lift.

  • Publication number: 20030047388
Abstract: A scissors lift with a drive apparatus that raises and lowers a load platform by extending and collapsing a scissors linkage. A drive motor moves a cam follower through generally horizontal reciprocal motion. The cam follower engages and follows a cam mounted on the scissor linkage to extend the scissor linkage. The cam is positioned and shaped to gradually accelerate and decelerate scissor linkage extension. The cam is also shaped to allow the drive motor to accelerate to an optimum desired operating speed before causing the drive motor to bear the load of extending the first scissor linkage and raising the load platform.

  • Patent number: 6364817
Abstract: An automotive framing apparatus with a support frame having a frame roof supported above a generally horizontal support surface. At least four gate assemblies are carried by a carrousel supported on the frame roof for rotational movement around a common vertical axis and form two gate assembly pairs of diametrically-opposed gate assemblies. The gate assemblies of each gate assembly pair are supported for pivotal movement between generally horizontal stowed and generally vertical working positions. A rotary drive selectively positions one gate assembly pair at a time in a framing position from which the two gate assemblies of the selected gate assembly pair can be pivoted by a drive downward to respective diametrically opposed working positions on opposed sides of a vehicle body to be welded.

  • Patent number: 6128814
Abstract: A press for press-fitting an axle tube into a differential housing having a locator and accurately locating a flange on the tube relative the locator by offsetting flange mislocation, deflection of the tube and press and deflection and/or shifting of the tube and housing fixtures during press-fitting. The press has a ram in operable communication with a drive and a computer in communication with the ram and drive to accurately control movement of the ram and depth of insertion of each tube. Carried by the ram is a probe that senses flange location relative on the tube for determining deviation in flange location and offsetting depth of insertion to compensate for any such deviation. Another sensor communicates to the computer the insertion force the ram is applying to the tube to determine tube and press deflection.
