Patent number: 8815610Abstract: Magnetic nanoparticles are detected across a thin membrane that separates the nanoparticles from a magnetic sensor. The technique can be used in a medical context, in which an analyte of interest (present in a test fluid, such as blood) is attached to the membrane. Other compounds are in turn bound to the analyte, with one of these compounds including a magnetic nanoparticle that is then detected by the sensor. In this way, the analyte is detected by detecting the magnetic nanoparticle. By counting the number of magnetic nanoparticles, the concentration of the analyte in the test fluid can be determined.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2010Date of Patent: August 26, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: David Berman, Qiu Dai, William Marvin Dyer, Wayne Isami Imaino, Alshakim Nelson

Patent number: 8755151Abstract: In one embodiment, a tape movement constraint comprises a tiltable tape roller bearing having a grooved surface adapted to contact and engage a surface of the tape as the roller barrel rotates. An actuator adapted to pivot the roller bearing surface controls the lateral position of a tape. In operation, in one embodiment, the roller barrel of the roller bearing is rotated by engaging a surface of the tape roller barrel with a longitudinally moving magnetic tape. At least a portion of any air bearing between the moving tape and the barrel surface is quenched using grooves formed in the barrel surface. The lateral position of the moving tape is sensed and the rotating roller barrel is tilted in response to the sensed lateral position of the moving tape to control the lateral position of the moving tape. Other embodiments are described and claimed.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 2012Date of Patent: June 17, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Armando Jesus Argumedo, William Marvin Dyer, Wayne Isami Imaino, Kevin Bruce Judd

Patent number: 8749922Abstract: A tape movement constraint for a tape drive system, comprises a tiltable tape roller bearing having a grooved surface adapted to contact and engage a surface of the tape as the roller barrel rotates, and an actuator adapted to pivot the roller bearing surface when the actuator is actuated, to control the lateral position of a tape. In operation, in one embodiment, a roller barrel of the tiltable roller bearing is biased in a first position on a pivot axis, using magnetic attraction between a movable magnet and a return path structure of magnetically permeable material. The roller barrel is pivoted on the pivot axis by conducting current through a fixed coil to generate a magnetic field which is conducted by the return path structure to interact with the magnetic field of the magnet. Other embodiments are described and claimed.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2012Date of Patent: June 10, 2014Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Armando Jesus Argumedo, Nhan Xuan Bui, William Marvin Dyer, Reed Alan Hancock, David Howard Flores Harper, Wayne Isami Imaino, Kevin Bruce Judd

Patent number: 6639760Abstract: A mechanical linkage, including a worm gear and a worm gear support bracket, for joining a drive motor to a helical gear; it is particularly adapted for controlling a tape drive head. The worm gear head is threadably engaged with the helical gear. The shaft of the worm gear is engaged with the motor and is sufficiently flexible to operably correct misalignments between the worm gear shaft and the motor shaft. The support bracket includes a flat leaf spring which provides lateral spring force against the worm gear shaft to maintain a driving engagement between the worm gear and the helical gear, while the leaf spring is stiff in the in-plane directions of movement. The support bracket also includes a bushing, such as a C-shaped bushing or a cylindrical bushing, which provides support for the worm gear shaft against the helical gear.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2002Date of Patent: October 28, 2003Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: William Marvin Dyer, James Howard Eaton, David Howard Flores Harper

Patent number: 6005209Abstract: A keyboard apparatus is provided for small and lightweight computers and the like. Keyswitches and a keyboard assembly comprise a sheet member having a plurality of key faces fixed thereon in a conventional keyboard arrangement. A plurality of cutouts are provided in the sheet member, partially surrounding each key face. A living hinge member is provided in the sheet member at one side of each key face. Each living hinge member includes a base section, an intermediate section, and a key face section. The former two and the latter two sections each interface at a living hinge. Depressing the key face causes the key face section to pivot about the living hinges to operate a corresponding set of electrical contacts, indicating operation of the key. A conventional rubber spring may transmit the pivot motion of the key face to the electrical contacts.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 1997Date of Patent: December 21, 1999Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Winslow Scott Burleson, William Marvin Dyer, Christopher Karl Eisbach, Derek Solomon Pai, Edwin Joseph Selker
