  • Patent number: 8185066
Abstract: A device may include an envelope detector to generate an envelope signal from the input signal, a drain bias controller to adjust a drain bias of the amplifier based on the envelope signal, a gate bias controller to adjust a gate bias of the amplifier based on the envelope signal, a predistortion controller to predistort the input signal based on the envelope signal, based on the adjusted drain bias, and based on the adjusted gate bias, and to output the predistorted signal, and an amplifier to receive the predistorted signal and to generate an amplified output signal from the predistorted signal. The device may be selectable to operate in a linear mode or a nonlinear mode. The nonlinear mode may be selected by applying a large gate offset bias.

  • Publication number: 20120081337
Abstract: An electronic device has a display, a controller, and a pair of haptic transducers connected to the display. The controller configures the haptic transducers to momentarily vibrate the display. A pair of sensors disposed on the display detects variations caused by the user touch in the vibrations. Based on an analysis of these variations, the controller can determine whether a user performed at least one of a swipe action and a multi-touch action, across the display.

  • Patent number: 8145004
Abstract: A camera assembly for generating high resolution photograph includes a sensor assembly that has two regions of different effective resolution. Image data from multiple images that are captured with the sensor assembly are combined to generate output image data in the form of a high resolution picture. A first region of the sensor is used to capture image data for the images that are combined. A second region, that is of higher effective resolution than the first region, is used to capture image data for use in aligning the image data from the plural images prior to combination.

  • Patent number: 8116680
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for aiding shoppers. A shopper enters a product search query into a hand-held device and, via Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology, transfers the query to a terminal at a shopping establishment. The terminal forwards the search query to a search engine over a network and the search engine, after consulting a database, returns results meeting the criteria of the search query to the terminal for presentation on a display at the terminal. The shopper is then offered the option of transferring the results data, via NFC devices located in the hand-held device and the terminal, from the terminal to a memory in the hand-held device.

  • Patent number: 8106749
Abstract: A method and a system are provided for controlling a controller without physically touching the controller. A hand or other object interacts with a field surrounding the controller, altering the field. A change in characteristic of the altered field causes a corresponding movement of the controller that, in turn, corresponds to an amount of change in a parameter of a target device being controlled by the controller. The parameter of the target device is controlled by the controller while a user has no physical contact with the controller.

  • Patent number: 8102810
Abstract: The wireless communication device and corresponding method described herein selectively switches between a single-frequency mode, such as appropriate for an EDGE network, and a multiple-frequency mode, such as appropriate for a multi-carrier EDGE network. Accordingly, a transmitting wireless communication device selectively switches between a single-channel mapping unit, used during the single-frequency mode, and a multi-channel mapping unit, used during the multiple-frequency mode. The multi-channel mapping unit modulates input data to output a modulated data stream for each of multiple adjacent frequency channels that, when combined, produce a multiple-frequency signal with reduced peak-to-average ratio. A receiving wireless communication device selectively switches between a single-channel demodulator, used during the single-frequency mode, and a multi-channel demodulator, used during the multiple-frequency mode.

  • Publication number: 20110300812
Abstract: Communications circuitry includes a controlled antenna tuner. The voltage across elements of the antenna tuner may be determined and, if an over-voltage situation is detected, remedial action may be taken. At times when a configuration of the antenna tuner is to be maintained and an over-voltage condition exists, the remedial action may include lowering an output power from a transceiver. Another type of remedial action may include introducing a phase shift between an antenna and the antenna tuner. At times when a configuration of the antenna tuner is to be changed and an over-voltage condition exists, the remedial action may include reducing output power of the transceiver. Another type of remedial action may include waiting for an opportune time to change the antenna tuner configuration.

  • Patent number: 8045799
Abstract: Image data for a digital photograph is segmented into a first portion and a second portion. The image data of the second portion is processed to have a quality lower than the image data of the first portion. An image file for the scene is stored where the image file contains image data corresponding to the first and second portions so that the image file has a high quality portion and a low quality portion.

  • Patent number: 8045543
Abstract: A technique for supplying alternative contact information when a communication attempt is unsuccessful is described. The technique comprises receiving an inquiry that includes an indication of an unsuccessful communication attempt and an identifier or address for the target of the failed communication attempt. Next, it is determined whether the identifier or address is associated with a group. If so, a response is generated, the response including one or more other identifiers or addresses associated with the group. Finally, the generated response is transferred in response to the inquiry.

  • Patent number: 8040921
Abstract: Methods and systems for selectively transferring confidential or private information to a user of a communication device are disclosed. In an exemplary method, a trigger event is detected at a first communication device, resulting in the retrieval of a data object for transmission to a second communication device. If the data object includes private or confidential information, consent of a user of the first communication device is required before the data object may be sent to the second communication device. In some embodiments, consent is obtained by explicitly requesting consent from a user. In others, consent may be deemed under pre-determined circumstances.

  • Patent number: 8023996
Abstract: Some electronic devices project video images onto a display surface that is external to the electronic device, and adjust the projected images to compensate for brightness and/or color of the display surface. An electronic device can include a video generator, a video projector, a camera, a calibration controller. The video generator can generate a video signal, and the video projector can project a video image in response to the video signal onto a display surface that is external to the electronic device to cause reflection of the video image. The camera can sense the reflected video image from the display surface. The calibration controller can adjust brightness and/or color of a subsequent video image that is projected by the video projector to compensate for differences between the video signal and the reflected video image sensed by the camera.

  • Patent number: 7969297
Abstract: Light sources are affixed at appropriate positions in a multilevel structure or in an obstructed environment. The light sources generate modulated light signals, such as controlled light-emitting diodes, which identify the positions of the light sources by their three-dimensional global positioning coordinates and/or equivalent representation that specifies their in situ locations in the environment. Mobile communication devices, upon receiving the light signals, can derive spatial positioning information and transmit such information to a remote location, such as an emergency response system.
