  • Patent number: 10845356
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for estimating the total base number of used oil in an engine. The systems and methods can involve characterizing the sulfur content and at least one other element content of the oil both before introduction into the engine and after passing through an engine cylinder during combustion. Depending on the aspect, a total base number of the oil prior to use can also be measured, or the total base number before use can be estimated based on the at least one element content.

  • Publication number: 20200165537
Abstract: Provided is a lubricating oil composition and method of using such a composition that provides for improved high temperature deposit resistance. The composition includes a lubricating oil base stock at from 20 to 95 wt % of the composition, at least one ashless organic friction modifier at from 0.1 to 20 wt % of the composition, and at least one overbased detergent at from 0.1 to 20 wt % of the composition. The remainder of composition includes one or more other lubricating oil additives. The deposit resistance of the lubricating oil composition as measured by TEOST 33C total deposits is at least 20% lower than the deposit resistance for a comparable lubricating oil composition not including the combination of the at least one ashless organic friction modifier and the at least one overbased detergent.

  • Patent number: 8921290
Abstract: A novel lubricant composition is disclosed. In one embodiment the lubricant composition comprises in admixture: a first base stock component comprising one or more base stocks each having a viscosity of at least 40 cSt, Kv100° C. and a molecular weight distribution (MWD) as a function of viscosity at least 10 percent less than algorithm: MWD=0.2223+1.0232*log (Kv at 100° C. in cSt); and a second base stock component comprising at least one Poly-Alpha-Olefin (PAO) base stock and at least one Group III base stock, each having a viscosity less than 10 cSt, Kv100° C.

  • Publication number: 20140187457
Abstract: A lubricating composition with improved shear stability having a kinematic viscosity (Kv100) from 5 to 32.5 cSt at 100° C., and a viscosity index from 140 to 200. The lubricating composition includes: a bi-modal blend lubricating oil including from 20 to 99 weight percent of a low viscosity basestock having a Kv100 from 2 to 8 cSt at 100° C., and from 1 to 20 weight percent of a high viscosity basestock having a Kv100 from 40 to 600 cSt at 100° C.; a viscosity modifier including a copolymer having units derived from monomers of (i) an ?-olefin and (ii) an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or derivatives thereof esterified with an alcohol; and an alkylated aromatic co-base stock in an amount from 1 to 8 weight percent and having a Kv100 from 3 to 15 cSt at 100° C.
