  • Patent number: 8705628
Abstract: A still block detector is provided at a stage before a moving image encoder. The still block detector divides a frame to be processed into a plurality of blocks, sorts the blocks in the frame in ascending order of movement amount, and sets the first one or more blocks the number of which is specified by a “corresponding block setting number” input from the outside of an encoding device, to “still blocks.” For the still blocks, the moving image encoder performs an inter-encoding process with respect to a moving image by forcibly setting motion vectors to zeros without performing a motion search or by forcibly setting DCT coefficients to zeros without performing DCT or quantization.

Abstract: The image coding method according to the present invention includes the following steps. At a histogram calculation step, a histogram of pixel values included in a block image is calculated. At a plane region detection step, a size of a plane region included in the block image is detected. At an orthogonal transformation size selection step, (i) a first processing size is selected as a processing size of orthogonal transformation for the block image when the histogram is bimodal and the size of the plane region is equal to or greater than the first threshold value, and (ii) a second processing size greater than the first processing size is selected as the processing size, when that the histogram is not bimodal or the size of the plane region is smaller than the first threshold value.

  • Publication number: 20120008685
Abstract: A reference picture selection unit compares a predicted inter-coding amount indicating a predicted amount of coding required to perform inter prediction on a coding-target field and a predicted intra-coding amount indicating a predicted amount of coding required to perform intra prediction on the coding-target field. Upon determining that the predicted inter-coding amount is relatively larger than the predicted intra-coding amount, the reference picture selection unit switches the reference picture from a field having the same parity as the coding-target field to a field which is referable and temporally closest to the coding-target field.
