    Abstract: An orthopedic flip-wing tissue retainer (2) comprises a flip-wing (7), tissue-retaining means (8) and a joint formed between the flip-wing (7) and the tissue-retaining means (8). The tissue retainer (2) is easily installed and used to anchor a biological tissue. The tissue retainer (2) can be used in combination with other devices to replace or repair a ligament or tendon in a joint. In particular, when used for ligament replacement, the tissue retainer (2) eliminates or at least minimizes the twisting that typically occurs during conventional surgery. In addition, the tension of the ligament graft can be precisely adjusted by using a tension-adjusting device (3 or 203) in combination with the flip-wing tissue retainer (2). The tension-adjusting device (203) can include a ball (204)-and-socket (205) joint.

    Abstract: The invention provides an improved Winged Fastener in which a large threaded nut is movably engaged with the threaded sleeve of the Winged Fastener wherein the nut is movable set in a washer such that the washer is placed against a surface, while the sleeve of the winged bolt is placed in a bore in a first matrix and a second matrix is set around the sleeve of the Winged Bolt. As the nut is turned on the threaded sleeve, the second matrix which is placed around the threaded sleeve is caused to be compressed and radially moved outward toward an inner surface of the first matrix. If the second matrix is of a rigid material, the cylinder of matrix is split longitudinally and the pieces are driven radially outward. The invention also provides a second improved Winged Fastener in which a hole is placed in a wing and a cable or tendon is attached to the wing through the hole.

    Abstract: An orthopedic fastener device based on a strong central shaft that is threaded in a one end region and that presents a ramp surface in the other end region. The ramp end is inserted down-hole a bore in bone while an expandable first collet having bendable circumferential flukes is snug to the shaft, presenting a diameter less than the bore. Partial axial withdrawal of the shaft from the bore forces the first collet into and against the shaft's ramp region, causing the collet's flukes to splay and strongly compressively engage the bone, thereby permanently anchoring the fastener's first end. Soft tissue, normally a ligament, is slipped over the shaft region extending beyond the bone, and is optionally grasped by a toothed washer. Another, second, split collet—initially expanded in its internal diameter that has and presents threads—slides along the shaft so as to tension the ligament, compressing it in position against the bone.

    Abstract: A winged compression bolt for repairing or fusing bone which is implanted and later removed from bone through a single skin incision. The device includes a central elongated shaft which movably sits in an outer cylindrical tube and supports adjacent one of its ends a pair of wings. A bore is drilled through the bone portions, the device is inserted and the wings are rotated to the horizontal position and compressed against the edge of the outer cylindrical tube and an adjacent bone surface. A securing means is on the opposite end of the central elongated shaft and tightened against the adjacent edge of the outer cylindrical tube and an adjacent bone surface, compressing the bone portions between the securing means and the wings.

    Abstract: An orthopedic implant device is provided for bringing portions of a fractured bone into proper alignment and abutment. The device is an elongate generally cylindrical unit surgically implanted within living bone with a fractured portion and includes a plurality of pivotally mounted struts which are deployed within the cancellous material of the bone distant from said fractured portion thereof. The struts are pivotally deployed radially outwardly until anchoring contact with the interior surface of the surrounding cortex of the distant portion of the fractured bone is established. The components of the device maintain a force urging the portions of the bone defining the fracture toward each other. When the device is to be removed from the bone, the struts can be collapsed so that the device can be withdrawn.
