    Abstract: When a turning state of a subject vehicle is detected, the action timing of the contact avoidance support device is slower than when the turning state is not detected. When an action timing determining part 22 estimates that there is the possibility of the subject vehicle coming into contact with the vehicle in front and a turning state of the subject vehicle is detected based on the output from a transversal acceleration sensor S4, a changing rate of the steering angle sensor S5, and a yaw rate sensor S3, a compensation interval calculating part 23 calculates a compensation interval depending on the size of the detected turning state (the amount of the steering angle, the changing rate of the steering angle, and the transversal acceleration). And the action timing of the break actuator 12 is slowed by this compensation interval.

    Abstract: A system for controlling running safety of a vehicle having an alarm and an automatic braking system. A plurality of decelerations &agr;2n of an obstacle such as another vehicle present ahead on the road is predicted and corresponding manipulated variables &agr;1n (braking amount) to be supplied to the vehicle which indicate possible deceleration of the vehicle are determined. Then threshold values L&agr;2n for alarming and automatic braking are determined corresponding to the predicted deceleration and are successively compared with the distance to the obstacle. When the distance falls below any of the threshold values, alarming or automatic braking is effected to avoid contact with the obstacle, thereby making the system relatively simple and enabling operation to match the driver's expectations.

    Abstract: In a vehicle safety running system, while a contact probability estimation section estimates that there is a probability that a subject vehicle comes into contact with an object and an automatic braking section performs automatic braking, when the driver voluntarily performs a steering operation to avoid the contact, an automatic braking cancellation gradient is calculated based on the contact probability detected with the contact probability estimation section and the steering operation amount detected with the steering operation amount detection section, whereby automatic braking is cancelled at a speed corresponding to the automatic braking cancellation gradient so calculated. When the contact is easily avoided through the steering operation, the automatic braking cancellation gradient is set large so as to cancel automatic braking quickly, while when the contact is difficult to be avoided, the automatic braking cancellation gradient is set small so as to cancel automatic braking moderately.

    Abstract: A vehicle travel safety device carries out automatic braking in order to prevent a subject vehicle from coming into contact with an object, and proximate expansion of an air bag is reliably prevented. When there is a possibility of a subject vehicle coming into contact with an object, automatic braking is carried out in order to prevent the contact. If a seat belt wear state sensor detects that an occupant is not wearing a seat belt and an air bag expansion possibility estimating means estimates that there is a possibility of an air bag expanding, by means of an automatic braking means, the deceleration rate of the automatic braking is reduced so that the occupant is prevented from moving forwards due to the inertia accompanying the braking and causing proximate expansion. When the speed of the subject vehicle at the time when automatic braking is started is high, the relative speed between the subject vehicle and the object at the time when automatic braking is started is high.

With the arrangement, the system can appropriately cope with a situation in which an obstacle, once detected, is lost during braking operation, without degrading the driving feeling or comfort and without causing the vehicle driver to experience annoyance, while ensuring obstacle avoidance without fail.

    Abstract: A braking-force distribution control process controls the front and rear wheel braking-force distribution in a vehicle by regulating the braking liquid pressure ratio for front and rear wheel brakes, based on differences between front wheel speeds and rear wheel speeds. When an abrupt turning state is determined, the braking liquid pressure distribution ratio for the rear brakes is decreased as compared with when the abrupt turning state is not detected. Thus, when braking during a sudden turning of the vehicle, a sudden increase in yaw rate can be inhibited to enhance the steerage stability performance of the vehicle.

The system determines whether the first laser radar is mounted on the vehicle such that the laser beam central axis is horizontal or inclines upward or downward relative to the road surface or vehicle body, based on the distances, a height of the first laser radar from the road surface, the angles at which the distances are measured and reference values. The system may correct the inclination if determined. With the arrangement, the system ensures detection of an obstacle on the road without fail and conduction of a desired obstacle avoidance control.

If a vehicle is being automatically controlled and the steering operation is carried out by the driver and if it is determined an obstacle can be avoided by a turnability increasing control operation, and if an avoiding space exists in a direction of turning of the vehicle, the turnability increasing control operation is carried out to perform the avoidance of the obstacle by the steering operation. If no avoiding space exists in the direction of turning of the vehicle, the avoidance of the obstacle by the steering operation is not performed, and a stability increasing control operation is carried out to effectively perform the avoidance of the obstacle by the automatic braking operation.

    Abstract: In a process for controlling a braking-force distribution in a vehicle for front and rear wheel brakes by regulating a braking liquid pressure for at least one of front wheel brakes and rear wheel brakes, based on a comparison of a rear wheel speed and a wheel speed difference target value and a difference between a front wheel speed, amounts of load variation on the front and rear wheels are calculated during braking. Correction values, corresponding to an amount of wheel diameter varied from a preset wheel diameter as a result of the displacement of the loads, are determined based on the amount of load variation. At least one of the front and rear wheel speeds is corrected by the correction values. Thus, the braking-force distribution to the front and rear wheel brakes is controlled so that the braking force is sufficient in either of the front wheels or the rear wheels due to the variation in load during braking.

    Abstract: A traction control method for a vehicle, comprising the steps of: judging an excessive slipping state of a plurality of driving wheels by taking into account, as at least one judgment requirement, whether or not a driving-wheel speed exceeds a braking-force controlling target wheel speed determined by taking into account a predetermined slip rate of a vehicle speed, and controlling a braking force for the driving wheels in accordance with the result of the judgment, wherein the intensity of a slipping tendency for every one of the driving wheels is determined on the basis of a judgment value which is set larger than the vehicle speed and smaller than the braking-force controlling target wheel speed, and the smaller the number of the driving wheels determined to have a large slipping tendency, the more the braking-force controlling target wheel speed is increased. This prevents the occurrence of an excessive control of braking force, when the slipping tendency of only a part of the driving wheels is large.
