    Abstract: A steering system for vehicles comprising a steering wheel, a front steering sub-system including a drive pinion interlocked to be rotatable with the steering wheel, a rack shaft having a first rack engaged with the drive pinion and a second rack separated from the first rack, and a driven pinion engaged with the second rack; and a rear steering sub-system including an input shaft operatively connected to the driven pinion, an off-centered pin provided at one end of the input shaft, a pair of rear tie-rods adapted each respectively to turn either of the rear wheels, and a joint member relatively rotatably connected to the off-centered pin and both of the rear tie-rods. The joint member has a longitudinal axis thereof extending transversely of the vehicle. The axis of the off-centered pin is located substantially on the longitudinal axis. The rear tie-rods are connected to the joint member substantially on the longitudinal axis substantially at the same level as the axis of the off-centered pin.

The rear wheel steering mechanism includes a crank member connected to the steering wheel, a movable member connected to the crank member, a restriction mechanism for restraining the movable member and permitting the latter to perform only restricted movements along a predetermined pattern, and an output mechanism interconnecting the movable member and the rear wheel for effecting the steering of the rear wheel according to components of motion in a predetermined direction of such restricted movements.

    Abstract: A vehicular steering system for steering both front and rear wheels through steering operation of a steering wheel wherein a rear wheel steering mechanism is advantageously reduced in both size and weight. The rear wheel steering mechanism includes a shaft member which rotates in interlocking cooperation with a steering wheel and which is inserted and supported rotatably through a cylindrical holder in a sleeve fixed to the vehicle body. A crank pin is attached to the shaft member, with a joint member being loosely mounted and supported thereon. A link mechanism is pivoted at one end thereof to the vehicle body and integrally connected at the other end thereof to the joint member, and right and left rear wheel steering tie rods are connected and supported respectively through ball joints to the right and left of the joint member.

A steered angle ratio .gamma. of the rearward wheels to forward wheels is selected to be in the range of 0<.gamma..ltoreq.0.6 when the vehicle is moving at a speed of 80 km/h or higher.

    Abstract: A steering apparatus for vehicles which includes a pinion rotatably mounted on an arm movable longitudinally in response to turning movement of a steering wheel, and a pair of longitudinally movable racks held in meshing engagement with the pinion. One of the racks is operatively coupled with front wheels of the vehicle and with a pivot arm pivotable on a movable pivot which is displaceable along the pivot arm in response to vehicle speeds. The other rack is coupled through a pivotable lever with an arm which is pivotally mounted on the pivot arm and is operatively coupled with the rear wheels. When the steering wheel is turned, the front and rear wheels are turned in the same direction or in opposite directions, depending on the position of the movable pivot on the pivot arm, which position is a function of the vehicle speed. The front and rear wheels are turned in the same direction when the vehicle is running at a high speed, and in opposite directions when the vehicle is running at a low speed.

    Abstract: A steering apparatus for a four-wheeled vehicle including a pair of pivotable knuckle arms connected to a pair of respective front wheels and actuatable through a steering gear by rotational movement of a steering wheel. One of the knuckle arms is pivotally connected to one end of a connector rod extending longitudinally of the vehicle, the other end of the connector rod being connected to a cam plate slidable in a housing. The cam plate has an inverted S-shaped cam groove or alternatively an S-shaped cam groove within which is slidably received a pin mounted on a tie rod pivotally connected between a pair of pivotable support arms supporting a pair of rear wheels, respectively. Due to the shape of the cam groove, the rear wheels are turned in the same direction as the front wheels when the steering wheel is rotated through a relatively small angle, and the rear and front wheels are turned in opposite directions when the steering wheel is rotated through a relatively large angle.
