    Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for equally aging a cathode ray tube (CRT). A video input terminal is coupled to the CRT and receives an external video signal. Control circuitry is provided, which detects the aspect ratio of the signal and determines whether there is a mismatch between the signal aspect ratio and an aspect ratio of a display screen in association with the CRT. If a mismatch between the signal aspect ratio and the screen aspect ratio exists, an equalization video signal is derived from the external video signal. A primary region of the CRT is illuminated in response to the external video signal, and a secondary region of the CRT, which would otherwise be unilluminated in response to the external video signal due to the mismatch between the signal aspect ratio and the screen aspect ratio, is illuminated in response to the equalization video signal. In this manner, the CRT is uniformly aged.

An envelope detecting signal of a reproducing signal from a magnetic head is compared with a reference potential by a comparator in order to automatically control the write timing to the field memory. The reference potential is adjusted based on an output signal of the comparator. The write timing to the field memory is controlled in accordance with an output signal of the comparator which compares the envelope detecting signal with the adjusted reference voltage. The apparatus of the invention is to be used in a video tape recorder.

    Abstract: A process for synthesizing material uses an exothermic reactor which comprises a coolant shell, two concentric pipes provided within the shell, a catalyst bed packed between inner and outer ones of the concentric pipes, an introduction tube connected to the inner pipe through which a starting fluid is introduced, and a communication path enabling the fluid after the passage of the inner pipe to be passed through the catalyst bed in a direction opposite to the direction of the passage through the inner pipe, the coolant shell having an inlet and an outlet for a coolant arranged in such a way that the flow of the coolant is parallel to the flow of the fluid within the catalyst bed. The coolant on the outside and the starting fluid on the inside of the catalyst bed cools the bed in such a way as to produce a temperature distribution along the bed that follows a maximum reaction rate line (M in FIG. 1) relating the concentration of the methanol to the temperature of the starting fluid.
