    Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining the particle size distribution of particles in a mass of a granular substance. The particles are caused to fall in a stream of separate particles past an irradiated screen, and an instantaneous television picture is taken of the particles and the projected images of the particles are used to measure the projected areas of the particles. Using these areas assuming the average shape of the particles to be substantially a rotational ellipsoid and using a coefficient according to the average configuration of the particles, the particle sizes and their distribution in the mass of particles are calculated.

    Abstract: A method for continuously measuring slag foaming within a converter during blowing and an apparatus for practising the method are disclosed.In this method, the foaming slag level is determined by detecting and processing a beat signal developed between the frequency-modulated transmitted wave and the reflected wave of a microwave radar. The apparatus for practising this method comprises a microwave generator, an antenna and a waveguide, and signal processing circuitry. The microwave generator generates frequency-modulated microwaves and supplies them to the antenna which is provided with a waveguide for directing these microwaves into the converter. The antenna with the waveguide are provided with water-cooling means and air purge means to overcome the heat, dust and splash from the converter.

    Abstract: In a high-temperature furnace such as a heating furnace, a melting furnace or a blast furnace, a cooling cell assembly of a ferromagnetic material such as iron is used in the furnace wall. The thickness of the cooling cell assembly can be detected by winding primary and secondary windings about an iron core, passing an alternating current through the primary winding and inserting a sensor in an inspection hole for detecting the current or voltage induced in the secondary winding, forming a magnetic circuit in the sensor and a portion of the furnace wall, and detecting variations in magnetic permeability between the cooling cell assembly and mortar, refractory bricks or air gaps.
