  • Publication number: 20030108088
Abstract: A novel and improved method for implementing a high-transmission-rate over-the-air interface is described. A transmit system provides an in-phase channel set and a quadrature-phase channel set. The in-phase channel set is used to provide a complete set of orthogonal medium rate control and traffic channels. The quadrature-phase channel set is used to provide a high-rate supplemental channel and an extended set of medium rate channels that are orthogonal to each other and the original medium rate channels. The high-rate supplemental channel is generated over a set of medium rate channels using a short channel code. The medium rate channel is generated using a set of long channel codes.

  • Patent number: 6567420
Abstract: Access to a variable rate multiple access system is controlled based upon a current loading. The current loading level is used to determine a transmission rate set point. The transmission rate set point may include a maximum transmission rate and a transmission probability. The transmission rate set point is passed to the remote unit which may access the system. A remote unit with data to send determines a desired transmission data rate. If the desire transmission data rate is equal to or greater than the maximum transmission data rate, the remote unit transmits at the maximum transmission data rate with a probability equal to the transmission probability.

  • Patent number: 6564042
Abstract: A method of modifying gain tables for the reverse-link communications in a cdma2000 wireless communication network includes the steps of estimating the velocity of a mobile station for a given frame error rate (FER) and data rate, and providing three gains to choose between based on the estimated velocity in order to specify a reverse-link transmit power level. The velocity estimation may be performed using a level crossing technique, a covariance approximation technique, or a Doppler spectrum estimation technique.

  • Publication number: 20030072331
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transmitting broadcast information in a multi-carrier communication system. The Sync Channel of the multi-carrier system is transmitted a 1.25 MHz channel bandwidth (i.e., over a single carrier), and to specify the preferred channels for the Sync Channel transmission instead of the preferred channels for the entire multi-carrier system. The Sync Channel Message will carry the additional information to indicating the center frequency of a multi-carrier system within a reserved set of frequency bands and indicating the frequency of a single carrier system in the reserved set of frequency bands. Considering the A block of the PCS band again, the preferred channels for Sync Channel transmission can be selected as channels 75, 150 and 225. This selection ensures that one of the preferred channels will always be used by any multi-carrier system regardless the location of its center channel.

  • Patent number: 6546248
Abstract: A method and apparatus for generating an autonomous Pilot Strength Measurement Message (PSMM) by a mobile station traveling in a multi-carrier wireless communication system. In a multi-carrier system, the mobile station receives the pilot channel of a base station on multiple carrier frequencies simultaneously. Fading may vary from carrier frequency to carrier frequency. New pilot strength definitions are used by the mobile station in a set of rules transmitted by the base station. The set of rules determines autonomous generation and transmission of PSMMs by the mobile station upon detection of pilots.

  • Publication number: 20030058822
Abstract: In a code division multiple access communication system (100), a method and an apparatus provide for efficient communications of data rate control information. A mobile station (102) communicates a request on a data channel (302) for reception of a data file on a traffic channel (203). In response to the request, a transmitter (600) in mobile station (102) starts communication of data rate control information on a data rate control channel (305). After concluding the delivery of a requested data file by a receiver (400) in mobile station (102), transmitter (600) ceases communication of data rate control information on data rate control channel (305) from mobile station (102).

  • Publication number: 20030043758
Abstract: In a communication system (100), a method and an accompanying apparatus provide for acknowledging reception of a packet of data. A receiver (400) at a serving base station (101) receives a message on an acknowledgement channel (340) for indicating the reception of the packet of data at a mobile station (102), and may determine an erasure of the message. A non-serving base station (160) may also receive the message on the acknowledgement channel (340) from the mobile station (102), determines a value of the message, and communicates the value of the message to the serving base station (101). The serving base station (101) changes the erasure to the value of the message, and terminates a transmission of a remainder of data units of the packet of data to the mobile station (102) when the value of the message is a positive acknowledgment from the non-serving base station (160).

  • Publication number: 20030039235
Abstract: High rate CDMA wireless communication is obtained by forming a set of individually gain adjusted subscriber channels. Each channel has a set of orthogonal subchannel codes having a small number of PN spreading chips per orthogonal waveform period. Preferably, the set of sub-channel codes are comprised of four Walsh codes, each orthogonal to the remaining set and four chips in duration. It is also preferred that pilot data be transmitted via a first transmit channel and power control data transmitted via a second transmit channel. The remaining two transmit channels are used for transmitting non-specified digital data including user data or signaling data, or both. One of the two non-specified transmit channels may be configured for BPSK modulation and the other for QPSK modulation.

  • Publication number: 20030031142
Abstract: In a code division multiple access communication system (100), a method and an accompanying apparatus provide for an efficient control of a gain level of a communication channel at various mobility levels. A rate of change of a carrier to interference ratio (C/I) of a communication channel received at a receiver (400) is determined. The gain level of the communication channel may be based on the rate of change of the C/I of the communication channel. A mobility level of the communication channel may be compared to a low mobility threshold corresponding to a low mobility level. If the mobility level meets the low mobility threshold, the gain level of the communication channel may be based on the rate of change of the C/I of the communication channel.

  • Patent number: 6505052
Abstract: A system for accessing broadcast SMS messages over a wireless communication system. A base station transmits SMS messages periodically and aperiodically over a broadcast channel. The base station allocates periodic slots in the broadcast channel for each of the subscriber services providing the SMS messages and transmits slot parameters to mobile units. Using the slot parameter information, the mobile units periodically wake up to scan the broadcast channel. The period for each category of broadcast SMS messages may be different and the period may apply to a single broadcast channel. Messages arriving aperiodically can be queued and transmitted in pre-scheduled broadcast channel frames. Messages with inter-arrival interval greater than the specified transmission period are simply repeated.

  • Patent number: 6496706
Abstract: The present invention is a novel and improved method and system for communicating a frame of information according to a discontinuous transmit format. In particular, the present invention describes a method of transmitting eighth rate speech or data frames employing transmit gating and energy scaling which simultaneously reduces the battery usage of a variable rate wireless communication device, increases the capacity of the reverse link and provides reliable communication of the eighth rate frames. In the present invention, four methods are presented for transmitting an eighth rate data frame in which half of the frame is gated out and the remaining data is transmitted at nominal transmission energy to accomplish the aforementioned goals. In addition, a power control system in which identifies forward link power control bits that .1have been gated out by the remote station and inhibits adjustment of the transmission energy in response to that identification is disclosed.

  • Patent number: 6480472
Abstract: A method and apparatus for supervising a dedicated control channel when in the discontinuous transmission mode. The mobile station monitors the frames it receives from a base station and maintains a counter of bad, good, and empty frames, referred to as COUNT1, COUNT2, COUNT3, respectively. If a received frame is a good frame, COUNT1 is reset to zero and COUNT2 is incremented. If the received frame is a bad frame, COUNT1 is incremented and COUNT2 is reset to zero. If the received frame is an empty frame, COUNT1 and COUNT2 are unchanged but COUNT3 is incremented. A transmitter coupled to the mobile station is enabled or disabled depending upon which, if any, of the COUNTs reaches or exceeds a designated threshold value. In another embodiment, an average aggregated value reflecting the strength of the pilot signals in an active set, measured at the mobile station, is used for comparison to a threshold.
