    Abstract: A fluorescent substance includes zinc with a concentration not larger than 400 ppm, and a composition represented by the following formula (I): Ln3(AlxGa1-x)5O12:Cey??(I) wherein 0.4?x?0.97 and 0.038?y?0.048, Ln being composed of yttrium, or yttrium and at least one element selected from scandium, lanthanum, gadolinium, samarium, lutetium, and terbium. An emission spectrum of the fluorescent substance as it is excited by light has a dominant wavelength ranging from 500 nm to 550 nm.
