In the honeycomb structure 1 of the present invention, the outer peripheral coat layer 3 is effectively inhibited from being damaged and peeled.

    Abstract: Using a slurry filler having a container having an opening top and storing plugging slurry and a cover attached to the opening top of the container and having a flat upper face and through-holes communicating the inside and the outside of the container and being disposed to correspond to cells to be plugged on an end face of the honeycomb structure, the honeycomb structure is set on the cover by positioning so that opening ends of cells to be plugged of the honeycomb structure match positions of through-holes of the cover, and the plugging slurry stored in the container is filled inside opening ends of cells to be plugged through the through-holes to form the plugged portions. According to this manufacturing method, a plugged honeycomb structure having no defects can be manufactured at low costs for a short time without restriction on operation circumstances with less industrial waste.

    Abstract: A honeycomb structure comprising porous partition walls which form, by surrounding, a plurality of cells extending between the two ends faces of the honeycomb structure, and an outer wall formed integrally with the partition walls. The cells consist of partial cells of outermost peripheral portion, having incomplete cell sections, which are located at the outermost peripheral portion of the honeycomb structure and are in partial contact with the outer wall, and complete cells having a complete cell section, other than the partial cells of outermost peripheral portion. In the complete cells, a plugged part is formed at one end of each complete cell so that each end face of the honeycomb structure shows a checkerwise plugging pattern. In the partial cells of outermost peripheral portion to be plugged according to the above-mentioned plugging pattern, part of them is plugged in the entire length and formed integrally with the outer wall and remaining cells have each a plugged part only at one end.

Regardless of variations in external dimension of the structure, etc. constituting the assembly, the minimization thereof, and proper holding state may be achieved easily without causing a fracture of the structure, etc.

The honeycomb structure has increased isostatic strength and thermal shock resistance and can be manufactured at low cost.

According to this undulated-wall honeycomb structure, advantages such as improved exhaust gas purification capabilities and catalyst capabilities, improved mechanical strength for canning, and further improved heat-resistant shock properties can be obtained.
