    Abstract: A rotating flow head (RFH) has a housing having an internal bore with diameter substantially equal to that of a riser and at least one flow port proximate one longitudinal end thereof. First and second arrays of radially extensible and retractable locking elements are disposed circumferentially around the RFH housing. The RFH has a bearing assembly (BA) housing having an exterior diameter selected to fit within the internal bore of the RFH housing so as to provide an annular space therein. The BA housing engages one of the arrays of locking elements when extended. A mandrel is rotatably, sealingly supported within the BA housing. Another end of the BA housing and the other array of locking elements provide longitudinal force on the BA housing when the other array is extended. A seal element disposed in the annular space is energized by the longitudinal force applied to the BA housing.

    Abstract: A method for responding to an adverse fluid event such as a fluid gain or fluid loss event includes pumping a drilling fluid through a drilling system having a drill string and into a well bore. The drilling system also includes at least two pressure control components operatively coupled to the drill string. The bottom hole pressure of the well bore may be monitored. Once a fluid loss condition or a fluid gain condition is detected, a response for each of the at least two pressure control components to the fluid loss or fluid gain condition is determined. The responses for the at least two pressure control components are prioritized, and at least one of the pressure control components are adjusted to mitigate the adverse pressure condition.

    Abstract: Methods and systems are for tripping pipe on a rig floor that is positioned over a well. A measuring device is operated to measure a length characteristic of a first drill pipe in a plurality of separated drill pipes. The length characteristic is inputted into a controller configured to control machinery to hoist the first drill pipe above the drill string, to connect the first drill pipe to the uppermost drill pipe in the drill string, and to operate the drill string to drill into the well. The controller is operated to calculate a first vertical position into which it is necessary to hoist the first drill pipe so that a predetermined clearance distance exists between the lower end of the first drill pipe and the upper end of the uppermost drill pipe in the drill string.
