    Abstract: A new system and method allows a Manager in a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) environment to gather updates from its Agents. The system and method comprise the unique provision of an index which is used in each of the Agent's tables for indicating the various revisions thereof. The index lexicographically increases with each revision to the table. The Manager maintains a record of the index of the data which it has received from its Agents, requesting only that data having a lexicographically larger indexing. Further, the index is used in related tables so that the tables will be kept in "sync" in that the Manager will know whether it has the latest updates so that an accurate picture may be portrayed.

    Abstract: Method and system for automatically determining and updating thresholds based on collected data samples for counter variables being monitored by a network management application. Historical data is accumulated and used to determine the mean and standard deviation of the monitored counter variables based on the aggregated sample values and a threshold factor is applied to the standard deviation and the resulting value added to the mean to establish the threshold value. The threshold value, which is adaptively updated, is used to determine whether the subsequently sampled values of the monitored counter variables are within a normal range, or that a potential problem exists requiring intervention by a network operator.

    Abstract: An improved method for dynamically and centrally managing a network which is being partitioned into Focal Point (FP) nodes and non-FP (NFP) or serviced nodes. Each FP node provides management services to an assigned group of non-FP nodes. The names of the non-FP nodes are maintained in a table called a "sphere of control" (SOC) table at the FP node that services those NFP nodes. As NFP nodes in the SOC table become active, the FP establishes a session with the NFP node and sends it a "Request to be Your FP" message. If the NFP node supports the keys (bit pattern identifying a particular category of management services data) for which authorization is being requested, the NFP node replies positively acknowledging the requestor as its focal point for the specified key. Thereafter, problem messages which are related to the particular type of management services are forwarded to the FP node.

    Abstract: The links in a data communications network following Systems Network Architecture may be categorized as limited resource links if those links are shared access transport facilities, such as a switched telephone network, X.21, X.25 or token ring local area network facilities. In setting up LU--LU sessions between network users, a limited resource session identifier field is set to a specific value if any of the links in the session data path is defined as a limited resource link. When a conversation between two users ends, the primary logical unit responds by determining whether the session has been identified as a limited resource session. If it has, the primary logical unit initiates action to deactivate the session without waiting for network control operation action. Allowing the primary logical unit to deactivate a limited resources session assures that the limited resource link or links will not remain allocated needlessly to an unused session.
