This particular invention accomplishes the objective of flat small packing by means of having a wedge shaped corner piece that allows the adjacent back pieces not to be angled thereby reducing package size 30%. There is flap on the bottom of the sofa base pieces that can fasten and enclose a hollow space inside of the base. Sofa backs, cushions, tools and parts all can be placed inside of the sofa base during storage and shipping inside of a box optimally made of cardboard. The box only needs to be big enough to contain the base piece. The sofa back can then be attached to the seat frame by metal threaded rods. The arms can be attached to the sides using the hardware and the cushions put in place. Supporting legs are screwed onto the bottom by hand and the sofa is complete.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

This invention falls within the field of knock down sofa kits which fit within a relatively flat rectangular box so that they may easily be stored in warehouses and transported. Inventive means of enclosing the kit in the smallest, flattest box are desirable because of the need for stable storage using the least amount of space. Further characterization of the relevant field would be that the invention falls in the field of sofa kits that can be readily assembled at home by the end user.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

This particular invention accomplishes the objective of flat small packing by means of having a wedge shaped corner piece that allows the adjacent back pieces not to be angled thereby reducing package size 30%. There is a flap on the bottom of the sofa base pieces that can fasten and enclose a hollow space inside of the base. Sofa backs, cushions, tools and parts all can be placed inside of the sofa base during storage and shipping inside of a box optimally made of cardboard. The box only needs to be big enough to contain the base piece. The sofa back can then be attached to the seat frame by metal threaded rods. The arms can be attached to the sides using the hardware and then cushions added. Supporting legs are screwed onto the bottom by hand and the sofa is complete.

Turning now to FIG. 1, the manner is shown by which one chair back (1) may be joined with another chair back (1) using a wedge piece (2) that forms a back with an arm. Note that the arms (1) and the wedge piece (2) also have bore holes for metal threaded rods (3). The wedge piece (2) can be assembled into the base piece (4) as shown by FIG. 11 using assembly washers (5), lock washers (6), nuts (7) and the tool (8) to engage with the metal threaded rods. Turning now to FIG. 12, a fully assembled corner chair module can be seen with feet (9) attached and with its cushions (10) in place. The backs, cushions, feet, tool, and parts can all be stored inside the base piece while the kit is being shipped in its box. Ottoman modules, chair modules and corner chair modules can all be assembled into more complex furniture configurations. Turning now to FIG. 4, the manner of attaching the feet (9) to the base piece (4) can be seen. The feet (9) are screwed into the bottom of the base piece (4) through holes that are located at the corners of the base piece bottom. A foot washer (11) may be placed between the foot (9) and the base piece (4).

Turning now to FIG. 5, the base piece (4) is shown to have a flap (12) at the bottom which is open in this drawing to show the support bands (13) that help support the upper part of the base piece (4). The flap may be closed and a closure means such as hook and loop fastener may be used to hold the flap in its closed position. Turning now to FIG. 6, the base piece (4) can be seen to hold items such as a cushion (10) and a parts box (14) that are placed in there prior to closure of the flap (12). Turning now to FIG. 7, the wedge piece (2) can be seen to be substantially an elongate rectangular cuboid having a first rectangle (15) and a second rectangle (16) which are joined at a first edge (17). The wedge piece (2) also has a top end (18) which is joined to the first rectangle (15) by a second edge (19) and is joined to the second rectangle (16) by a third edge (20). A bevel face (21) is formed by a slice originating at a line segment (22) connecting the second edge (19) and the third edge (20) and proceeding at an outward angle along the long axis of the wedge piece (2) until the plane of the bevel face (21) meets the first edge (17).

5. A structure comprising:

a first convex irregular pentagon bounded by a first line segment, a second line segment, a third line segment, a fourth line segment, and a fifth line segment; wherein said first line segment is parallel to said third line segment and said second line segment is parallel to said fourth line segment;
a second convex irregular pentagon bounded by a sixth line segment, a seventh line segment, an eighth line segment, a ninth line segment, and a tenth line segment; wherein said sixth line segment is parallel to said eighth line segment and said seventh line segment is parallel to said ninth line segment;
a third convex irregular pentagon bounded by an eleventh line segment, a twelfth line segment, a thirteenth line segment, a fourteenth line segment and a fifteenth line segment; wherein said eleventh line segment is parallel to said thirteenth line segment and said twelfth line segment is parallel to said fourteenth line segment;
wherein said third line segment joins said eighth line segment so that said first convex irregular pentagon is disposed at a first right angle to said second convex irregular pentagon;
wherein said seventh line segment joins said fourteenth line segment so that said second convex irregular pentagon is disposed at a second right angle to said third convex irregular pentagon;
wherein said second line segment joins said thirteenth line segment so that said first convex irregular pentagon is disposed at a third right angle to said third convex irregular pentagon; and
a triangle which is bounded by said fifth line segment, said tenth line segment and said fifteenth line segment;
a first rectangle bounded by a sixteenth line segment, a seventeenth line segment, an eighteenth line segment, and a nineteenth line segment; wherein said sixteenth line segment is parallel to said eighteenth line segment and said seventeenth line segment is parallel to said nineteenth line segment;
a second rectangle bounded by a twentieth line segment, a twenty first line segment, a twenty second line segment, and a twenty third line segment; wherein said twentieth line segment is parallel to said twenty second line segment and said twenty first line segment is parallel to said twenty third line segment;
wherein said eighteenth line segment joins said twenty second line segment so that said first rectangle is disposed at right angles to said second rectangle;
wherein said twenty first line segment joins said eleventh line segment so that said second rectangle is disposed at a fifth right angle to said third convex irregular pentagon; and
wherein said seventeenth line segment joins said twelfth line segment so that said first rectangle is disposed at a sixth right angle to said third convex irregular pentagon;
a third rectangle bounded by a twenty fourth line segment, a twenty fifth line segment, a twenty sixth line segment, and a twenty seventh line segment; wherein said twenty fourth line segment is parallel to said twenty sixth line segment and said twenty fifth line segment is parallel to said twenty seventh line segment;
wherein said twenty fourth line segment joins said ninth line segment, said twenty fifth line segment joins said fourth line segment, said twenty sixth line segment joins said nineteenth line segment, and said twenty seventh line segment joins said twenty third line segment;
wherein said third rectangle is fixed against a furniture base using a first attachment means; and
wherein a first furniture back is fixed against said furniture base using a second attachment means and said first furniture back adjoins said first convex irregular pentagon.

6. The structure of claim 5 wherein a second furniture back is fixed against said furniture base using a third attachment means and said second furniture back adjoins said second convex irregular pentagon.
