INVISIBLE INK REVEAL OBJECTS AND METHOD OF USING SAME
Invisible ink reveal objects and methods of making and using same are described. In some embodiments, the objects are three-dimensional objects (e.g., animals, figurines or toy models) that are assembled by the user from a variety of pieces. The pieces may be comprised of multiple layers, such as a base layer, a film that includes one or more designs covering the base layer and an invisible ink-reactive ink application that hides the one or more designs when the coating is dry and reveals the one or more designs when the user brushes invisible ink reveal formula on the invisible ink reactive ink application. The coating and film may be on one or multiple sides of the pieces. The pieces may be provided to the user in a sheet that is partially precut to facilitate removal of the pieces. In other embodiments, the present disclosure provides a sheet or roll of stickers.
The present invention relates to arts and crafts.
Background of the InventionInvisible ink reveal technology has been applied to coloring books, including those sold under the trade name COLOR WONDER by Crayola.
Examples of patents describing invisible ink technology are described in, for example, U.S. Pat. Nos. 9,464,185, 9,790,383, and 5,338,066, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entireties.
Typically, invisible ink technology is achieved via chemical changes between two reactive chemical ink compositions.
One method is to use a single invisible ink reveal formula where the color is achieved/revealed based on the paper being treated with specific inks and the color reveal is therefore pre-determined.
Another method is to use specific color reveal markers where the marker only reveals that single color as determined by the formula in that marker. The marker reacts with a specially treated paper.
The INKREDIBLES Magic Ink is an invisible ink product, meaning that when the ink comes into contact with a treated paper substrate, the chemical composition changes causing the invisible ink to go from a clear to a pre-determined color. The chemical composition change to the pre-determined color is permanent. In this example only a single invisible magic ink pen containing a suitable formula is required to bring about the color change, the actual color changes are determined by additional specific chemical inks printed on specific areas of the paper substrate.
Another example, the COLOUR BURST mess free invisible ink marker and coloring booklet is an invisible ink product where specific colors are determined by individual marker pens containing a specific single color formula. The specific color is chosen by the end user as indicated on the outside of the marker, upon contact with the treated paper substrate that specific color is revealed and is not pre-determined.
Applying such technology to other substances creates challenges.
For example, it could be advantageous to use invisible ink technology with three dimensional objects, such as models of animals, figurines or other objects (such as toy vehicles such as toy planes), however, such models are typically made from plastic or wood, which is problematic because plastic and wood are not suitable as printed substrates.
Thus, there is a need for processes and kits that use invisible ink technology with a suitably printed substrate.

In some embodiments, the substrate/film is paper, as noted above. In addition, the base layer 30 may be in the form of a sheet 16 (as described above) that has a top 24 and bottom 26 and the adhesive 46 may attach the substrates 70 to the top and/or bottom of the base layer 30). The components may have one or more features described above.

Typically, invisible ink reveal ink/formula 20 are applied by an applicator 62 with an applicator head/tip 66 that is similar to a marker. This creates a problem when working with three-dimensional objects 14 because the edges on such three-dimensional objects 14 may not receive all the invisible ink reveal ink/formula 20. Accordingly, as shown in
Having now described the invention in accordance with the requirements of the patent statutes, those skilled in the art will understand how to make changes and modifications to the disclosed embodiments to meet their specific requirements or conditions. Changes and modifications may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention. In addition, the steps of any method described herein may be performed in any suitable order and steps may be performed simultaneously if needed. Use of the singular embraces the plural.
Terms of degree such as “generally”, “substantially”, “about” and “approximately” as used herein mean a reasonable amount of deviation of the modified term such that the end result is not significantly changed. For example, these terms can be construed as including a deviation of at least ±5% of the modified term if this deviation would not negate the meaning of the word it modifies.
