  • Patent number: 6991022
Abstract: The invention relates to investment casting shell molds and their method of manufacture. The method entails mixing fiber such as ceramic refractory fiber and organic fiber with ceramic filler to form a dry blend. The dry blend is mixed with a binder sol such as colloidal silica sol to form slurry. An expendable preform is dipped into the slurry, stuccoed and dried. This step is repeated until a ceramic shell of a desired thickness is formed over the expendable preform. The expendable preform then is removed, and the green ceramic shell is fired. Molten metal then may be poured into the shell to form a metal casting.

  • Patent number: 6991024
Abstract: Apparatus and methods according to the present invention preferably utilize electroosmotic pumps that are capable of generating high pressure and flow without moving mechanical parts and the associated generation of unacceptable electrical and acoustic noise, as well as the associated reduction in reliability. These electroosmotic pumps are preferably fabricated with materials and structures that improve performance, efficiency, and reduce weight and manufacturing cost relative to presently available micropumps. These electroosmotic pumps also preferably allow for recapture of evolved gases and deposited materials, which may provide for long-term closed-loop operation. Apparatus and methods according to the present invention also allow active regulation of the temperature of the device through electrical control of the flow through the pump and can utilize multiple cooling loops to allow independent regulation of the special and temporal characteristics of the device temperature profiles.

Each plate includes, between the terminus and the second end, a turn portion joining the two longitudinal columns. The first and second plates are joined together with the longitudinal flat sections abutting each other and the columns of angled ribs cooperating to form undulating first and second internal flow channels there-through separated by the abutting longitudinal flat sections. The first and second internal flow channels each have an upstream area and a downstream area relative to a flow direction of an external fluid flowing over the plate pair.

  • Patent number: 6991026
Abstract: A heat exchange cell for use in a recuperator includes top and bottom plates spaced apart to define therebetween an internal space. Within the internal space are inlet and outlet header tubes communicating with a plurality of internal matrix fins. The header tubes are rigidly affixed to at least one adjacent header tube and to the top and bottom plates. The header tubes may have a rectangular cross-section and may, for example, be metallurgically bonded to the top and bottom plates and to each other through brazing. Rigidly affixing the header tubes to each other reduces the stress on the fillets that bond the tubes to the top and bottom plates. This in turn permits less structural material to be used in the header portions of the cell and reduces pressure drop across the headers.

  • Patent number: 6991028
Abstract: A thermal reservoir for a two-pipe hydronic air-conditioning system is disclosed. Said thermal reservoir includes a well-insulated tank for alternatively storing hot and cold water. Said thermal reservoir contains plurality of valves for directing hot water stored therein into the two-pipe hydronic air-conditioning system, thereby causing cold water within the two-pipe hydronic air-conditioning system to be displaced therefrom and into well insulated storage tank. Said process is fully reversible in that cold water displaced from the two-pipe hydronic air-condition system into said thermal reservoir may be subsequently directed from the thermal reservoir and restored to the two-pipe hydronic air-conditioning system and hot water therefrom directed back into storage. Accordingly a two-pipe hydronic air-conditioning system may be switched between heating and cooling modes with rapidity and without waste of the energy content of said hot water and said cold water.

  • Patent number: 6991030
Abstract: A method and apparatus for assembling a wellscreen onto a perforated base pipe are provided. The wellscreen defines a tubular body which is suitable for subterranean use in oil, gas, and water wells. In accordance with the present invention, the wellscreen first defines a perforated base pipe having termination members at its opposite ends. Disposed on each termination member is a continuous helical, step-tiered surface. The helical surface serves as a support surface for a layer of filtering material which is rolled around the base pipe. The filtering material is pre-cut to a correct diameter and bias to match the diameters and bias of the spiraling termination support surfaces. The filtering material is connected to the rings to form a substantial seal on the opposite ends. A protective, perforated outer shroud is optionally disposed around the filtering media as well.

  • Patent number: 6991034
Abstract: A natural gas production system prevents liquid accumulation in the wellbore and minimizes friction loading in the wellbore by maintaining production gas velocity above a critical minimum velocity. A pressurized gas is injected into the well to supplement the flow of production gas such that the velocity of the total gas flow up the well exceeds the critical velocity. A choke is fitted to the gas injection line, and total gas flows are measured by a flow meter. A flow controller compares the measured total gas flow rate against the critical flow rate, and determines a minimum gas injection rate required to maintain the total gas flow rate at or above the critical flow rate. The flow controller then adjusts the choke to achieve the desired gas injection rate. The injection gas may be recirculated production gas from the well, or a gas from a separate source.

  • Patent number: 6991038
Abstract: The method relates to a riser comprising a main tube and auxiliary lines. Each tubular element forming the auxiliary lines is fastened at one end by a complete link with the central tube and at the other end by a link allowing a longitudinal play J with the central tube. The method provides adjustment of play J so that, on the one hand, during conventional drilling operations, the elements forming the auxiliary lines slide in relation to the central tube and, on the other hand, during show control or testing operations, the elements forming the auxiliary lines form hyperstatic assemblies with the central tube. The method thus allows to prevent buckling of the peripheral lines when they are under pressure because they work under hyperstatic conditions.

  • Patent number: 6991040
Abstract: A lockout tool dimensioned to be received within a housing of a subsurface safety valve (SSV). The lockout tool generally comprises an elongated housing, and an expander mandrel slidably received within the housing. Together, the elongated housing and expander mandrel are run into the wellbore and landed into the housing of the SSV such that the end of the expander mandrel opens the flapper valve. A portion of the lookout tool housing shoulders against the flow tube in the SSV to drive the flow tube downward, thereby maintaining the flapper of the SSV in its open position. As the expander mandrel moves downward through the hard scat of the SSV, the mandrel engages the flow tube and expands it against the hard seat. In this manner, the flow tube is expanded into permanent, frictional engagement with the hard seat. This, in turn, looks the flapper member of the SSV in its open position.

  • Patent number: 6991046
Abstract: An expandable eccentric reamer for placement in a drill string up-hole of a conventional drill bit. The reamer blade is actuated by drilling fluid pressure to radially extend to a drill out diameter greater than a pass-through diameter. The reamer body is shaped to have an eccentric outer surface configuration to accommodate the reamer blade therein. The reamer blade acts as a piston arm in response to drilling fluid pressure and moves along a shaft anchored in a hump region that forms an eccentricity in the outer surface configuration of the body. The reamer blade has an outer edge configuration that positions the cutters thereon to prevent them from engaging a casing of a well borehole upon deployment.

  • Patent number: 6991047
Abstract: In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, a method for drilling wellbores includes drilling a main wellbore and disposing a casing string in the main wellbore. The casing string has a deflecting member and a sealing member coupled thereto. The method further includes disposing a drill string having a drill bit coupled at a lower end thereof in the casing string and drilling, from the main wellbore, a first lateral wellbore at a first depth with the drill bit. The method further includes removing the drill bit from the first lateral wellbore, transferring the casing string and the drill bit to a second depth that is higher than the first depth, drilling, from the main wellbore, a second lateral wellbore at the second depth with the drill bit, and preventing, using the sealing member, a fluid from the first lateral wellbore from flowing above approximately the second depth while drilling the second lateral wellbore.
