Abstract: A multilayer antireflection coating for a temperature sensitive substrate such as plastic. One layer is a DC reactively sputtered metal oxide which may be deposited quickly and without imparting a large amount of heat to the substrate. Another layer has a refractive index lower than the substrate.

Abstract: A data communication system, such as a local area network, is provided with a capability of transmitting isochronous data. Preferably the system conveys both isochronous data and non-isochronous data by time-multiplexing the data into a recurring frame structure on a four-bit nibble basis. Switching of data is handled using switching tables. The tables can be updated by a processor. Updates can be performed asynchronously so that the processor does not have to wait until the switch tables are in an unused updatable state before outputting the update information. An efficient encoding scheme permits transmission of both isochronous and non-isochronous data over existing media, such as twisted pair, without degrading bandwidth previously achieved for non-isochronous data over the same media, such as using an Ethernet system. The arriving data is de-multiplexed at the hub into separate channels for handling the separate streams by appropriate hardware.

Abstract: A lubrication system for equipment (e.g. centrifugal pump) employing a rotating shaft and corresponding support bearings is disclosed. The lubrication system includes a lubricant dispenser having a plurality of blades or dispensing members pivotally attached thereto, the dispenser affixed to the shaft for rotation therewith. Centrifugal force created by rotation of the shaft to which the dispensing blades are attached causes the blades to extend radially outward from the shaft center during operation so as to dispense the lubricant throughout a lubricating or misting chamber in order to lubricate the adjacent bearings. The system is also advantageous in that the blades are permitted to pivot or flap downward toward the shaft in either direction so that the dispenser may be more easily inserted into the misting chamber during manufacturing of the device or replacement of the lubricating system.

Abstract: A novel growth arrest homeobox gene has been discovered and the nucleotide sequences have been determined in both the rat and the human. The expression of the novel homeobox gene inhibits vascular smooth muscle cell growth. The growth arrest homeobox gene hereinafter referred to as the “Gax gene” and its corresponding proteins are useful in the study of vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation and in the treatment of blood vessel diseases that result from excessive smooth muscle cell proliferation, particularly after balloon angioplasty.

Abstract: A methodology that allows for highly efficient transfer and stable integration of DNA into both established eukaryotic cell lines and primary cells, including non-dividing cells such as human peripheral blood monocytes and macrophages, entails the use of a synthetic polypeptide comprised of a peptide domain which corresponds to a nuclear localization signal sequence and a DNA binding domain which is rich in basic amino acids, separated by a hinge region of neutral acid which prevents stearic interference between the two domains. A synthetic polypeptide that allows for highly efficient transfer of DNA into eukaryotic cells, including, for example, non-dividing cells such as human peripheral blood monocytes and macrophages.

Abstract: This invention relates to a composition comprising a tramadol material and acetaminophen, and its use. As used herein tramadol refers to various forms of tramadol. The compositions are pharmacologically useful in treating pain and tussive conditions. The compositions are also subject to less opioid side-effects such as abuse liability, tolerance, constipation and respiratory depression. Furthermore, where the components of the compositions are within certain ratios the pharmacological effects of the compositions are superadditive (synergistic).

Abstract: A process for producing 2,6-dialkylnaphthalene from a hydrocarbon feedstock that contains at least one component selected from the group consisting of dialkylnaphthalene isomers, monoalkylnaphthalene isomers, polyalkylnaphthalenes, and naphthalene, is provided that includes the following steps: I. separating the hydrocarbon feedstock and/or a dealkylation product fed from step III into a naphthalene fraction, a monoalkylnaphthalene fraction, a dialkylnaphthalene fraction and a remaining products fraction; II. separating and purifying 2,6-dialkylnaphthalene from the dialkylnaphthalene fraction of step I; III. dealkylating the hydrocarbon feedstock and/or the remaining products fraction of step I and feeding the dealkylation product to step I; and IV. alkylating the naphthalene and monoalkylnaphthalene fractions of step I; wherein the hydrocarbon feedstock is fed to step I or step III.

A second position has the bandana extending downwardly from the head protective device and the bandana has the free ends tied behind the head for the purpose of securing the head protective device against accidental removal.

Abstract: A thigh pad protector that includes superiorly connected and individually ventilated pad protectors for the anterior (front) and lateral (side) of the thigh. The anterior thigh protector portion is constructed to fit into an inside pocket in the garment normally worn outside the protector (such as a pair of football pants or athletic girdle). The fixation of the anterior thigh protector portion within the inside pocket of the garment provides support to both the anterior thigh protector portion and the superiorly connected lateral thigh protector portion about the thigh. The fact that the two distinct thigh protectors are connected only at their superior (upper) ends allows the protectors to conform to the natural curvature of the thighs with normal garment compression and to remain in conformity with the legs through the full range of muscular motion (contraction and relaxation) without constriction or decreased mobility.

A coordinated belt may be attached to the rear surface of the main body and may have a number of openings formed in rows along its length to allow one or more pegs to be selectively moved along the belt to indicate the results of a game played by spinning the spinning element in the belt buckle.

Abstract: An impact absorbing protective gear for protecting an area of the wearer's body includes a pad, which is configured to generally conform to the area of the wearer's body, and a fluid containing body. The pad includes an inner surface and an outer surface, with the inner surface for facing the area of the wearer's body. The pad is formed from a resilient energy-absorbing material wherein the outer surface flexes inwardly when impacted by a force applied to the outer surface. The inner surface includes at least one recessed portion. The fluid containing body is located in the recessed portion and has a volume less than the volume of the recessed portion wherein the fluid containing body can deform in the recessed portion upon impact from the force to thereby increase the amount of energy absorbed by the protective gear.

Abstract: A water-separating apparatus for toilet tank bridges a toilet tank and a water supply includes a concentric tube, a distributing tube and a solenoid valve. The concentric tube has a large tube containing a small tube, and an inlet connecting to the water supply and an outlet connecting to the distributing tube. The solenoid valve is connected to an inlet of the small tube of the concentric tube. The distributing tube has a large tube containing a small tube, and an inlet connecting to the concentric tube and an outlet connecting to a tube of the toilet tank. The concentric tube can divide the water supply to a plurality of water flows to meet multiple water supply requirements of the toilet tank and simplify the piping configuration outside the toilet tank.

Abstract: A spa includes a housing having a tub for holding water, and a retractable entertainment unit having a display. The housing includes an upper portion having a seal surface extending around the tub. The entertainment unit is reasonably retractable through an opening in the upper surface and movable between a) a retracted position wherein the display is hidden from view and a top of the entertainment unit is disposed below and laterally outward from the seal surface, and b) an extended position wherein the top is raised above the seal surface and the display is visible.

Abstract: A roman tub faucet with a hand shower diverter mechanism integral to the tub spout. The diverter mechanism is especially suited for applications where service access to only the outer tub finished surface is practical. The faucet eliminates the need to remove panel or tile portions from the tub area for diverter mechanism service or replacement. The faucet also eliminates the need for an additional installation hole that is required for roman tub faucets with a separate diverter mechanism and tub spout.

Abstract: An emergency shower system for attachment to a water pipe located behind a wall and a valve mounted to the pipe. The system includes a frame mounted to the wall around the valve, a panel connected to the frame for covering an opening in the wall to expose the valve, the panel having an opening, a plate mounted to the panel to close the panel opening and a handle mounted to the plate. The system also includes a linkage pivotally connected to the plate and to the valve, such that vertical movement of the handle and plate are translated to rotational movement by the linkage so as to operate the valve. There are no openings apparent in the front of the shower system. The handle only moves vertically and at a constant distance of about one and a half inches from the wall. An eye/face wash station may be included with the shower. The eye/face wash station includes a pull down tray with two spray nozzles. The nozzles are connected to another valve which is opened by the rotation of the pull down tray.

Abstract: A disposable solid waste detainment plumbing trap. The trap has a container for collecting water and solid waste discharged from a sink through a line threadably connected to an inlet of the container, and for discharging water through an outlet threadably connected to a waste line. It has a lid which seals the container, and a valve for venting either air or water from the container, to relieve the pressure of air trapped in the container. Using this disposable trap, solid waste from a sink can be quickly and easily collected and disposed of without spilling of or contact with water or the solid waste.

Abstract: A hammock stand is described that can be assembled from a plurality of tubular members. The tubular members are of similar dimensions and to some extent interchangeable. This allows the stand, in disassembled form to be contained in a relatively small box for shipping and storage.

Abstract: A siderail support mechanism comprises a bottom cross-member having a first lower pivot and a second lower pivot, a first support arm and a second support arm. The first support arm includes a first upper pivot shaft and a first lower pivot shaft, the first upper pivot shaft being configured to pivotally attach to the siderail at a first upper pivot and the first lower pivot shaft configured to pivotally attach to the first lower pivot of the bottom cross-member. The first upper pivot includes an oblong slot. The second support arm includes a second upper pivot shaft having a locking cog for locking the siderail in a deployed position. A release handle is centrally positioned on the siderail to enable one-handed operation in disengaging the locking mechanism and lowering the siderail to a stowed position.

Abstract: A cover and patient restraint for use with a radiologic imaging table having an upper surface on which a patient may lie, the cover having a central section corresponding generally to the length and width of the patient supporting surface of the table and a width substantially greater than that of the supporting surface so the opposite sides of the cover form flaps which extend beyond and depend from the upper surface of the table to prevent the collection on the table surface of liquids. The cover includes a pad of cushioning material inboard of the flaps to enhance the comfort of a patient lying on the cover. Restraining straps are coupled to anchor strips extending longitudinally of the cover adjacent opposite sides of the pad so as to enable the straps to be placed in overlying relation to the patient in any selected one of a large number of adjusted positions. The cover is encapsulated in a pliable, washable, radiologic inert coating.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a collapsible, convertible, extendable, traction-providing, portable stretcher/body splint type rescue device for use generally in emergency rescue field situations and having three main parts: a top or head portion, a middle or body portion, and an optional bottom or foot portion, all of which are formed from radiolucent material. The rescue device of the present invention further includes a head gear portion that is slidably adjustable, can provide dynamic cervical traction in the field, and is positioned on, yet easily removable from, the top or head portion. There is also padding on the top and middle portions which is removable, as well as a plurality of restraining devices such as webs, gores, straps and flaps to immobilize a victim on the rescue device.

In some embodiments, the pillow can have a visco-elastic body having a center portion elevated with respect to adjacent lateral side portions, each of which can have a recess. The recess can have a concave shape in both lateral and forward/rearward directions of the pillow, can extend and be open to the front and/or lateral sides of the pillow, and can be positioned and shaped to lie beneath the face of a user whose head is at least partially supported by the center portion of the body. Also, the center portion of the pillow can be separated from the laterally adjacent recesses by arcuate-shaped boundaries.

Abstract: A dividable mattress for use in providing separation between the bedmates of a bed. The dividable mattress has two dividers and two parallel slots running substantially from the head to the foot of the mattress. Each divider may be selectively deployed by extending the divider bottom within one of the slots when separation of the bedmates is desired. The dividable mattress may also be used as an ordinary undivided mattress when the dividers are removed from their slots, and the slots are hidden by a flap which extends along the length of the slot and which may be secured to the top surface of the mattress with fastening material. When the dividers are not deployed, the dividable mattress looks substantially identical to an undivided mattress.

Abstract: Three-dimensional unitized thermoplastic foam structures are made by thermoplastic welding of different foam components. The unitized foam structures may include a planar base to which other foam components are welded to project from the base and provide a flexible three-dimensional structure. The thermal bonding or welding of the thermoplastic foam components creates a unitized structure which is both flexible and load bearing. For mattress and seating applications, the welded foam structures may be combined with an innerspring, and certain of the foam components of the structure may mechanically engage parts of the innerspring. The preferred foam deck has first and second panels interconnected by one or more webs. One or more foam decks may be employed. Other foam components may be attached to the foam decks or other components. The utilized foam structures can be employed as single or double-sided mattresses, seating structures or other flexible support structures.

Abstract: A bladed spoke wrench device used to retain the orientation of a bladed bicycle spoke to prevent unnecessary torsional displacements from being applied to the spoke during spoke tensioning and adjustment. The bladed spoke wrench includes two spoke retention slots of different widths to accommodate the most common bladed spoke thicknesses. The spoke retention slots extend both through the thickness of the tool on both sides and along one face of the tool, allowing the user to orient the tool in any of several ways that the user finds comfortable and efficient during use. The tool also includes one or more hook shaped areas that are adapted to open a bottle and further includes an opening at one end that defines a ring useful for attachment of the bladed spoke wrench to a peg on a tool board, a key ring or other hook.

Abstract: The present invention provides an improved mechanical coupling for rapidly adjusting the elevation of a working edge portion of a tool which working edge portion is subject to wear that decreases the effective length of the working edge portion. In one embodiment, the bristles of a drum-type brush comprise the working edge portion. Once the working edge is properly adjusted with respect to a work surface, the amount of downforce imparted by the working edge and the pattern of the working edge on a work surface are maximized. In use an operator compares the length of the working edge to a first indicia set displayed adjacent the working edge and adjusts the elevation of the working edge with reference to a second indicia set which corresponds to the first indicia set. Surface maintenance vehicles which support an adjustable height tool with a working edge that wears down may utilize the present invention.

Abstract: A vacuum cleaning machine has a cannister with an inlet port and at least two outlet ports. At least two filters are disposed inside of the cannister, one in pneumatic communication through each of the outlet ports. At least two valves are disposed outside of the cannister. Each valve is in pneumatic communication between a vacuum source and an outlet port so as to permit air to be drawn by the vacuum source from the inlet port simultaneously through the filters. A controller operates the valves to switch the filters from the vacuum source to ambient air so as to permit ambient air to be sequentially intermittently drawn through corresponding valves and filters into the cannister. Preferably, the controller includes a timing mechanism for setting the delay time of the sequential valve operation and a timing mechanism for setting the intermittent time of connection of each filter to ambient air.

A braking structure is provided that has braking elements and washers to increase the friction resistant forces so that the small pintle has adequate friction resistant forces to anchor a display device after unfolding. The maneuvering structure has anchor elements and retaining troughs of different sizes that cannot be coupled with each other when the display device is unfolded and swiveled to 180 degrees to maintain the original friction resistant forces so that the display device may be anchored at any angle after unfolded.

This handle extension is useful with crank handle operated ceiling mounted ventilation openings commonly found in recreational vehicles.

In one aspect, the apparatus comprises blending apparatus for blending fibers of different materials, at least one of which is absorbent, and for conveying the blended fibers to a fiber collection station. A first weighing apparatus weighs out a first quantity of first fibers at a first weigh station. A second weighing apparatus weighs out a quantity of second fibers at a second weigh station. The first and second quantities of fibers are conveyed to a blend opener having a beater roll rotatable in the blend opener. The beater roll opens and mixes the fibers. The fibers are entrained in an air stream by a pneumatic conveyor system and conveyed to a fine opener. The fine opener has a rotatable clothing roll to further open and mix the fibers. The pneumatic conveyor system is operable to separate fiber fines from longer fibers and to deliver the longer fibers to said fine opener.

The apparatus mounts an interchangeable rotary cleaning brush (14) or grinding wheel (16) on a wheel drive (11) so that the wheel can be spun around an axis lateral to the path of the revolving flats (4). During a carding operation the height of the cleaning brush (14) is accurately adjusted by a precision feeding mechanism so that the brush cleans down to the surface of the revolving flats of the revolving flats (4) and so cleans and polishes the wires (4b) and the fouling which commonly accumulates beneath the points (4c) of the wires. The brush (14) can readily be replaced by a grinding wheel with a peripheral grinding surface.

Abstract: A transducer having a ceramic element in which the ceramic is elevated above a polymer and a method of manufacturing the transducer. The transducer comprises a piezo-composite element comprising a ceramic element embedded in epoxy. In an array, the ceramic elements may be in the form of posts. The plurality of ceramic elements is slightly elevated above the polymer and in staggered arrangement with the polymer. The element is manufactured by first grinding the face of the composite and removing damaged ceramic by acid etching the ceramic. The epoxy is removed by plasma etching so that the ceramic is above the epoxy. The composite is sputter plated so that a maximum temperature that could damage the plating is not exceeded. The ceramic is then poled so that a maximum temperature that could damage the plating is not exceeded. Contacts are then attached to the plating adjacent the ceramic.

Abstract: A tool for beveling the end of a pipe is comprised of a hollow, tubular body having a central, longitudinal axis of rotation, an inboard coupling end, and an opposite outboard working end. A plurality of longitudinally spaced, transversely directed latching pin bores of equal size are defined through the wall of the tubular body. A core member is disposed coaxially within the tubular body. The core member includes a beveling cutter head and a longitudinal stem having a radially inwardly directed, circumferential latch position groove. A transversely oriented latching pin is engaged in a selected one of the latching pin bores in the body and with the latch position groove of the core stem. This allows alternative selection of each of the latch position bores for insertion of the latching pin. The particular bore selected determines the longitudinal position of the core stem latch position groove within the body that will be aligned with the latching pin.

Abstract: An automatic suction and repelling device for rivet gun, which comprises a body and a handle, and the intake passages thereof are in communication each other; the rear center of the body is furnished with a regulation ring and a used-nail cylinder; the regulation ring can be adjusted to move by means of screwing so as to adjust the volume of pressure air to enter the body, and to adjust the vacuum suction force in the used-nail pipe; during rivet-pulling work, the rivet gun can automatically suck in, and can suck a used nail into the used-nail cylinder upon the rivet-pulling work done.
