Abstract: Coding techniques for a video image compression system involve improving an image quality of a sequence of two or more bi-directionally predicted intermediate frames, where each of the frames includes multiple pixels. One method involves determining a brightness value of at least one pixel of each bi-directionally predicted intermediate frame in the sequence as an equal average of brightness values of pixels in non-bidirectionally predicted frames bracketing the sequence of bi-directionally predicted intermediate frames. The brightness values of the pixels in at least one of the non-bidirectionally predicted frames is converted from a non-linear representation.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining a motion vector predictor (MVP) or a MVP candidate based on a MVP set are disclosed. In video coding systems, the spatial and temporal redundancy is exploited using spatial and temporal prediction to reduce the video data to be transmitted or stored. Motion vector prediction has been used to further conserve the bitrate associated with motion vector coding. Motion vector prediction technique being developed for the current high efficiency video coding (HEVC) only uses a MVP candidate set including spatial MVP candidates and a temporal candidate corresponding to the co-located block. In the current disclosure, the spatial and temporal motion vector predictor set is extended to include at least one spatially neighboring block associated with list 0 reference pictures and list 1 reference pictures, and co-located block and its neighboring block associated with list 0 reference pictures and list 1 reference pictures.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for deriving a temporal motion vector predictor (MVP) are disclosed. The MVP is derived for a current block of a current picture in Inter, or Merge, or Skip mode based on co-located reference blocks of a co-located block. The co-located reference blocks comprise an above-left reference block of the bottom-right neighboring block of the co-located block. The reference motion vectors associated with the co-located reference blocks are received and used to derive the temporal MVP. Various configurations of co-located reference blocks can be used to practice the present invention. If the MVP cannot be found based on the above-left reference block, search for the MVP can be continued based on other co-located reference blocks. When an MVP is found, the MVP is checked against the previously found MVP. If the MVP is the same as the previously found MVP, the search for MVP continues.

A two-dimensional interpolation filter of n×m coefficients may be separable, i.e., it may be separated into two one-dimensional filters with m and n coefficients, respectively. The bitstream may include, per video unit and sub-sample position, information indicating whether to use a newly-generated, a cached, or a default filter that may be a separable two-dimensional filter. The information may be structured in a way that takes advantage of the two-dimensional filter being separable. When a newly-generated filter is signalled, the bitstream may contain information pertaining to the characteristics of the newly-generated filter, such as its coefficients. A decoder may fetch this information from the bitstream to create the filters which are applied to samples of the video unit. An encoder may create a bitstream as described.

Abstract: Enhanced performance is achieved by combining channel coding with the space-time coding principles. With K synchronized terminal units transmitting on N antennas to a base station having M?K receive antennas, increased system capacity and improved performance are attained by using a concatenated coding scheme where the inner code is a space-time block code and the outer code is a conventional channel error correcting code. Information symbols are first encoded using a conventional channel code, and the resulting signals are encoded using a space-time block code. At the receiver, the inner space-time block code is used to suppress interference from the other co-channel terminals and soft decisions are made about the transmitted symbols. The channel decoding that follows makes the hard decisions about the transmitted symbols. Increased data rate is achieved by, effectively, splitting the incoming data rate into multiple channels, and each channel is transmitted over its own terminal.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for detecting temporary high level impairments, such as noise or interference, for example, in a communications channel, and subsequently, mitigating the deleterious effects of the dynamic impairments. In one embodiment, the method not only performs dynamic characterization of channel fidelity against impairments, but also uses this dynamic characterization of the channel fidelity to adapt the receiver processing and to affect an improvement in the performance of the receiver. For example, in this embodiment, the method increases the accuracy of the estimation of the transmitted information, or similarly, increases the probability of making the correct estimates of the transmitted information, even in the presence of temporary severe levels of impairment. The channel fidelity history may also be stored and catalogued for use in, for example, future optimization of the transmit waveform.

Abstract: An approach for Soft-output K-Best MIMO detection comprises computing an estimated symbol vector and Log-Likelihood Ratio (LLR) values for transmitted bits. The approach includes a relevant discarded paths selection process, a last-stage on-demand expansion process, and a relaxed LLR computation process. The relevant discarded paths selection process includes analyzing the K-Best paths and discarded paths at each intermediate tree level and selecting only those discarded paths for further processing that will help in LLR computation for at least one of the transmitted bits. The last-stage on-demand expansion process includes expanding K paths at the tree level 2NT?1 (NT=number of transmit antennas) on-demand to only 2K?1 lowest Partial Euclidean Distance (PED) paths at last tree level 2NT. The relaxed LLR computation scheme includes approximating LLR computations by assuming that discarded path PED is greater than or equal K-Best path PED.

Abstract: This invention concerns soft-decision demapping of Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) signals to enable soft-decision channel decoding in a communications system. In a first aspect the invention is a method for performing the soft-decision demapping of Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) signals to enable soft-decision channel decoding in a communications system. The method comprises the steps of: Extracting baseband signals from both I-and-Q channels. Sampling the baseband signals to extract a stream of complex numbers. Converting the stream of complex numbers to frequency domain vectors with components for each subcarrier frequency. Approximating bit log-likelihood ratios for each symbol directly from the real and imaginary parts of the corresponding frequency vector, without equalisation by the estimated channel. And, soft-decoding of the channel codes using the approximated log-likelihood ratios.

Abstract: Disclosed are a method for demodulating received signals and an apparatus therefore which can maintain quality of signals and can reduce computational complexity. A demodulation method of a receiving device for receiving a plurality of signals modulated through a M-ary (M is a natural number of 1 or more) modulation method includes: comparing channel frequency response power of a first channel with channel frequency response power of a second channel, selecting M reference signals on the basis of the compared result, selecting corresponding signals paired with respective selected M reference signals, and estimating transmitting signals from the M signal pairs including pairs of the reference signal and the corresponding signal. Accordingly, the computational complexity is reduced from O (M2) to O (M).

Selection is made of filter characteristics to be exhibited by an adaptive, input noise whitening filter. A noise estimator estimates a noise component of a noise sequence. An autocorrelation estimator estimates the noise-component autocorrelation. A determination is made as to whether the autocorrelation exceeds a threshold. If so, filter characteristics are selected to cause the input noise whitening filter to operate to inject whitening noise into the received sequence.

Abstract: To maintain a synchronized wireless peer group, timing signals may be periodically transmitted by one or more devices in the wireless peer group. These periodic timing signals may be transmitted by different wireless devices in the peer group, distributing (sharing) the transmit power burden among the different wireless devices, increasing the useful operation time of the individual wireless devices. Similarly, the wireless peer group may monitor for timing signals received from devices that are not part of the wireless peer group. This monitoring burden may also be distributed (shared) among the devices in the peer group allowing for a greater sleep time for individual wireless devices, increasing the useful operation time of the individual wireless devices.

Each data bit of the random data is divided into several sampling intervals according to a phase number of the multi-phase clock. The digital logic unit analyses sampling values logically, judges the corresponding sampling interval of each sampling value and outputs signals for indicating that a frequency of the random data is higher or lower than the frequency of the single-phase clock based on differences in the corresponding sampling intervals of the sampling values at two adjacent times.
