Publication number: 20130032510Abstract: This invention relates to open-pit mining wherein crushed bitumen is fed into an enclosed pyrolyzer and heated under pressure in a reduced atmosphere where the cracking of asphalt results in a tar-free bitumen in the form of volatile matter containing a hydrogen rich, non-condensable syngas with vaporized light liquids and incandescent char. The syngas and vaporized light liquids are desulfurized and upgraded in a first hot gas cleanup, while part of the hot char is gasified with air into a fuel gas and into oil-free, tar-free, dry, solid tailings; the other part used as fuel for heating the pyrolyzer. The fuel gas passes through a second hot gas cleanup, producing clean, desulfurized lean gas ideal to generate clean, efficient electric power. Emitted CO2 is collected and converted to slow-release fertilizer. The tailings (clean sand and clay) reclaim the mine, while fertilizer enriched soil, topping the tailings, accelerates forest growth.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 1, 2011Publication date: February 7, 2013Inventors: Albert Calderon, Richard Owen McCarthy, Terry James Laubis

Publication number: 20130032532Abstract: A water treatment method and a method for producing ultrapure water are provided in which urea in raw water is sufficiently decomposed, and an organism (bacterial cells) in biological treatment is prevented from flowing downstream. In a water treatment method for performing biological treatment of raw water containing urea, a carbon source is added to the raw water, and the raw water is then supplied to biological treatment means 1 and 2 having a fixed bed formed of an organism-supporting carrier to perform the biological treatment. The biological treatment after the addition of the carbon source to the raw water improves the efficiency of decomposition and removal of urea. The biological treatment means using a fixed bed formed of an organism-supporting carrier decreases the number of bacterial cells flowing downstream.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 28, 2011Publication date: February 7, 2013Applicant: Kurita Water Industries, Ltd.Inventors: Nobukazu Arai, Nozomu Ikuno

Publication number: 20130032533Abstract: Integrated membrane treatment systems for treatment of an aqueous solution. In embodiments, components, such as an MBR, are integrated with means to recover energy from the system, for example from an RO concentrate, to operate the other components. In embodiments including biological treatment, RO is integrated with other components, such as an MBR with the ROs ability to remove inorganic nitrogen enabling biological treatment to be performed with only partial nitrification and the MBR operated without active pH control. In embodiments, RO is integrated with a chlorine generator to convert chlorides present in the RO concentrate for an in-situ source of oxidizing biocides for disinfection purposes. Chloramines may be generated in-situ from residual ammonia and chlorides in the RO reject. In embodiments, carrier media is employed in a membrane tank to enhance removal of residual organics by the MBR and to also improve effectiveness of membrane scouring.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 1, 2011Publication date: February 7, 2013Inventors: Vyacheslav Libman, Boris Eliosov

Publication number: 20130032534Abstract: Processes for removing hydrocarbon contaminants from soil and groundwater via enhanced biological denitrification. A contamination zone of groundwater and/or soil is identified to define a volume or zone of contaminants to be treated. A source of nitrate is applied to the contaminant zone to serve as an electronic acceptor for enhanced bioremediation of the petroleum hydrocarbons. A further carbon source, secondary to the primary contaminant hydrocarbons, is added to form a barrier about the nitrate treatment zone to stimulate degradation of any nitrate migrating from the treatment zone. A further carbon source is also added to stimulate the degradation of any residual nitrate once the primary carbon source of the contaminant hydrocarbons have been destroyed.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 1, 2012Publication date: February 7, 2013Inventors: SCOTT B. Publication number: 20130032536Abstract: Disclosed are hemodialysis and similar dialysis systems including fluid flow circuits. Hemodialysis systems may include a blood flow path, and a dialysate flow path including balancing, mixing, and/or a directing circuits. Preparation of dialysate may be decoupled from patient dialysis. Circuits may be defined within one or more cassettes. The fluid circuit and/or the various fluid flow paths may be isolated from electrical components. A gas supply may be provided that, when activated, is able to urge dialysate through the dialyzer and blood back to the patient. Such a system may be useful during a power failure. The hemodialysis system may also include fluid handling devices, such as pumps, valves, mixers, etc., actuated using a control fluid. The control fluid may be delivered to the fluid handling devices using a detachable external pump. The fluid handling devices may have a spheroid shape with a diaphragm dividing it into two compartments.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 8, 2012Publication date: February 7, 2013Applicant: DEKA Products Limited PartnershipInventors: Michael J. Publication number: 20130032538Abstract: A method of purifying high temperature water utilizing forward osmosis is described comprising exposing the fluid to a semi-permeable membrane comprising a material capable of functioning effectively at 70-85° C., the membrane comprising a feed-solution-facing surface and a draw-solution-facing surface; directing a draw solution comprising at least one organic liquid solute and a solvent to the draw-solution-facing surface of the semi-permeable membrane, such that a quantity of the fluid is drawn by osmotic pressure across the semi-permeable membrane into the draw solution, leading to said fluid having a higher concentration of dissolved solids than prior to exposure to the semi-permeable membrane, and leading to the draw solution being more diluted than prior to being directed to the semi-permeable membrane; and boiling the draw solution so as to separate the organic liquid solute from the fluid drawn across the semi-permeable membrane for recirculation of the organic liquid solute.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 1, 2012Publication date: February 7, 2013Applicant: NRGTEK, INCInventor: Subramanian Iyer

Publication number: 20130032539Abstract: Filtration device suited for concentration of liquid samples, particularly biomolecules, and a method of concentrating, desalting, purifying and/or fractionating liquid samples. In certain embodiments the device includes a housing having a sample reservoir, and two substantially vertically oriented and spaced apart membranes disposed in the housing. An underdrain is associated with each membrane such that fluid passing through each membrane flows through a respective underdrain into a filtrate collection chamber. The fluid that does not pass through the membrane is collected in the retentate collection chamber, and can be recovered such as by a reverse spinning step, achieving recoveries greater than about 90%. The substantially vertical orientation of the membranes increases the available membrane area by at least 2.7 times the area available in a conventional filter device.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 11, 2012Publication date: February 7, 2013Applicant: EMD MILLIPORE CORPORATIONInventor: EMP Millipore Corporation

Publication number: 20130032540Abstract: A modular water purification system has a high pressure pump interchangeably received into one of two or more alternative power modules that can rely on different energy sources, such as an combustion engine module or an electric motor module. The pump applies water pressure to a reverse osmosis filter element. The system is reconfigurable for a given deployment, such as with a higher pressure pump operation for a high dissolved solute concentration, such as sea water desalination, or at a lower pressure for fresh water. Modules for deploying parallel paths each having a high pressure pump and reverse osmosis filter can be supplied as an addendum, or included in the supplied unit. The supplied unit is dimensioned so that the modules are stackable atop one another and in abutment to fill out a rectilinear volume on a pallet.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 5, 2012Publication date: February 7, 2013Applicant: TerraGroup CorporationInventors: Primo L.
